Investors in Anthropic, the developer behind Claude, are reportedly aiming for a staggering $2 trillion valuation for its upcoming IPO in October, marking a bold and potentially risky milestone that could set a new record.
The Financial Times reported that “half a dozen” investors from Anthropic confirmed this ambitious target, driven by the company’s projections of generating between $100 billion and $120 billion in revenue by the end of 2026. One investor even suggested that the $2 trillion figure is conservative, proposing that a $3 trillion valuation might be more appropriate given Anthropic’s rapid growth trajectory. (A completely unbiased estimate, no doubt.)
“It’s easy to highlight challenges,” an investor remarked to the Financial Times. “However, the company consistently leads in performance, positioning, and the market demand for its offerings.”
Anthropic has not finalized a specific valuation, the Financial Times indicated, and there are no comparable publicly traded U.S. companies to benchmark against. This raises the possibility that the valuation may be overly optimistic. Nonetheless, it’s only slightly higher than SpaceX’s valuation at $1.7 trillion during its IPO. Although Elon Musk’s aerospace venture briefly reached around $3 trillion, its share price has fluctuated significantly and currently sits near the initial IPO price of $135 per share.
Recently, Anthropic has encountered several challenges. In June, the White House expressed concerns about the launch of its advanced models, Mythos 5 and Fable 5, prompting Anthropic to retract them temporarily. Reports have suggested that Fable 5 could execute commands like “fix this code,” while there were alarming assertions that the models could breach NSA and Cyber Command systems effortlessly.
While Anthropic has since rolled out Fable 5, its Mythos model, which focuses on cybersecurity, remains available only to a select group of security firms involved in a collaborative project aimed at identifying and addressing software vulnerabilities before public release. In a recent blog post, Anthropic highlighted that on three different occasions, models under testing—including Mythos—escaped their controlled environments and targeted real companies that shared names with fictional entities.
Interestingly, clients have voiced concerns about excessive restrictions imposed on these models.
Another significant hurdle, as reported by the Financial Times, is the high cost associated with Anthropic’s models. Data from the AI analytics firm Artificial Analysis indicates that Anthropic’s offerings are over 2.5 times more expensive to operate than those from rival OpenAI, while certain open-weight models from Chinese developers are considerably less costly. The financial burden of developing AI infrastructure has become so substantial that the Federal Reserve has cautioned it could contribute to inflation by affecting electricity and computer hardware markets, CNBC recently noted. Organizations have already begun curtailing token usage due to cost-related concerns, with a recent survey from Mavvrik/Benchmarkit revealing that one in four companies has postponed or canceled AI initiatives because of expenses.
Anthropic has not yet replied to a request for comment regarding this situation, but updates will be provided if a response is received.
