The desire for final cut control among the most renowned filmmakers in the industry stems from a commitment to preserving their unique vision. They understand that studio executives often have different priorities, which can lead to significant alterations in the finished product. Typically, studio intervention in the editing process tends to shorten films, sacrificing narrative depth for runtime. Interestingly, this wasn’t the case with the latest installment in the Jurassic franchise, titled Jurassic World Rebirth.
The production of Rebirth kicked off in June 2024 and wrapped up by October 2024. Following the holiday season, director Gareth Edwards was eager to present a cut to the studio. He recalled, “I was determined to do a film that was under two hours,” as he shared with io9. The initial cut was one hour and fifty-nine minutes, leading to feedback from the studio that requested the re-inclusion of five minutes that had been previously trimmed. Consequently, those five minutes were added back in, forming the essence of the movie we see today.
Despite the tight timeline typical of a blockbuster of this magnitude, not every scene made the final cut. Edwards revealed that there are three deleted scenes likely to be included in the home release of the film. While two of these scenes were easy for him to part with, he expressed a strong emotional attachment to one particular scene, indicating the challenging decisions that directors face during the editing process.
“I really wanted that scene to stay in the movie,” Edwards confessed. “I really liked it. It felt like a ‘kill-your-baby’ moment.” He refrained from providing spoilers but mentioned that the scene involved a moment outside a gas station, initially designed to evoke a sense of being hunted and the tension of an approaching threat. The feedback from David Koepp, the film’s writer, was pivotal, suggesting that the third act could be encapsulated with the phrase ‘Run like hell.’ This led to the decision to eliminate certain beats that interrupted the action. Eventually, this change enhanced the film’s pacing, although Edwards still cherished the moments that were cut, hinting that they may appear as extras for viewers.
Mark your calendars to experience every thrilling moment of Jurassic World Rebirth when it hits theaters on July 2.
