Around 7:30 p.m. local time, lifeguards entered the water upon noticing two swimmers in distress. Sykes and his best friend were caught in the rip current together at this perilous stretch of shoreline. The incident occurred after designated swimming hours when lifeguards had already vacated their posts. they remained nearby due to the unusually hot temperatures that day. As lifeguards raced to assist, Patrice recalled that Sykes urged them to prioritize rescuing his friend.

“His best friend mentioned he became tired, and that’s when the lifeguard reached him. My son insisted the lifeguard should help his friend first, saying, ‘No, go and pull my best friend out of the water.’ He always put others before himself, and that’s what I admired most about him,” Thompson reflected.
