The return of the iconic boxy SUV is anticipated in 2029.
Honda enthusiasts are in for a treat: the automaker is reportedly set to reintroduce the Element as an accessible hybrid vehicle. As reported by Automotive News, Honda plans to unveil this refreshed model in 2029, aiming to compete with the Ford Bronco Sport. This new compact hybrid SUV will be strategically positioned between Honda’s HR-V and CR-V, the latter of which is already available in a hybrid variant.
The decision to revive the Element reflects Honda’s recognition of the growing interest in compact, off-road-capable vehicles like the Bronco. Currently, Honda offers the TrailSport trims for both the CR-V and Passport, along with rugged variations of the Pilot and Ridgeline catering to full-size SUV and truck fans. Reports indicate that Honda intends to manufacture the hybrid Element at its Ohio facility, with a sales target of approximately 100,000 units in its first full year on the market.
The original Element was discontinued in 2011 after experiencing a decline in sales. it garnered a dedicated fanbase, and many of these vehicles remain on the roads today. The unique interior design, which lacks carpet (except for the SC trim), makes the Element particularly easy to clean. Its rear seating arrangement is versatile: seats can fold flat for camping, be positioned against the sides for transporting smaller items, or even be completely removed, enhancing the vehicle’s functionality for various uses.
Should Honda position the hybrid Element between the HR-V and CR-V, potential buyers can expect a starting price in the range of $30,000 to $35,000. This news is especially promising for U.S. consumers, given that Honda introduced three new electric vehicles late last year with the caveat that none would be available in the U.S. market.
Engadget reached out to Honda for a response to this report, and a company representative provided the following statement: “The Honda Element has maintained a cult following since its discontinuation in 2011, and hopes for its possible return circulate widely online. We genuinely appreciate the enthusiasm surrounding the Element, but we will not speculate on our future product plans.”
