Portable Monitor: A Premium Yet Impressive Choice

Spread the love

Espresso Displays has established itself as a leading provider of portable monitors, and now it has filled a noticeable gap in its lineup. Previously, the only high-end option was the flagship Espresso 17 Pro, priced at $800. Meanwhile, the more budget-friendly models, such as the Espresso Touch 13 at $469 and the Touch 15 at $499, offered decent alternatives. Today, Espresso has introduced the Espresso 15 Pro, a portable monitor that combines the best features of its larger counterpart into a compact design, priced at $699, which includes a stand. This new offering is perfect for those who prioritize both performance and portability.

While the price point may seem high, the Espresso 15 Pro provides an exceptional blend of functionality and portability that makes it an ideal choice for travelers seeking a reliable 15-inch display.

Pros
  • Exceptional brightness
  • Sleek and modern design
  • Single-cord connectivity for convenience
  • Ability to add touch support to Mac devices
  • Wide range of accessories available
Cons
  • Higher price point
  • Stand+ can be relatively heavy
  • Refresh rate limited to 60Hz

One of the standout aspects of the Espresso 15 Pro is its remarkably minimalist design. Crafted from matte black aluminum and complemented by glossy glass, the monitor offers a sophisticated aesthetic. For those who prefer a matte finish, Espresso provides textured screen protectors that can be easily applied. The monitor does have a slight chin, and aside from the two strategically placed USB-C ports, its exterior is elegantly simple, which I personally find appealing. Weighing in at just 1 pound and 11 ounces, it feels light and manageable despite its specifications.

When it comes to performance, the Espresso 15 Pro boasts a 4K LCD panel that exceeds expectations. With a peak brightness of 550 nits (verified to be 556 nits with my light meter), it outshines the 450 nits offered by the larger 17-inch model. Additionally, the display covers 100% of the Adobe RGB color spectrum with 10-bit color depth (featuring 8-bit plus 2-bit frame rate control). However, a higher 120Hz refresh rate would have been an excellent addition, as it is currently capped at 60Hz. This limitation may not impact typical usage, but it’s worth noting for gamers or video editors.

The Espresso 15 Pro is incredibly user-friendly, making setup a breeze. Each USB-C port is designed to handle both power and data transmission through a single cable, so all you need to do is connect the included cord, and you’re ready to start using it. The only exception arises with laptops that lack sufficient power output via USB-C, but during my testing with four different laptops (both Mac and PC), I encountered no issues. The display even took the initiative to download the EspressoFlow software, which enhances touch support for Apple devices. Furthermore, the innovative Glide feature intelligently positions the monitor based on its arrangement relative to your laptop, providing a seamless experience. I was pleasantly surprised when the 15 Pro correctly aligned itself to the left of my laptop’s built-in screen.

Having recently transitioned to a Mac for work, the added touch support for Apple’s laptops is a fantastic feature. Although I’m not a professional artist, the monitor’s compatibility with Espresso’s optional stylus enables drawing and sketching, making the Espresso 15 Pro an excellent travel companion for users seeking additional screen space or a portable solution for creative work.

In addition to screen protectors and stylus pens, there are several important accessories specifically designed for the Espresso 15 Pro. One of the main accessories is the $49 Espresso Case, a magnetic folding cover that offers protection during transport and can be flipped to serve as a kickstand for work. This accessory is straightforward yet effective, providing the functionality you expect.

For those seeking a more robust option, the Espresso 15 Pro is compatible with the $69 Stand+. This stand resembles traditional desktop monitor stands but is foldable for improved portability. It features a strong magnet that securely mounts the monitor in various positions, offering flexibility and stability. While the price may be steep for some, I have come to appreciate how it allows for precise positioning of the 15 Pro. The build quality surpasses many desktop monitor stands I own. The downside, however, is that the Stand+ weighs 1 pound and 4 ounces, making it almost as heavy as the monitor itself, which could be cumbersome for some users.

The Espresso 15 Pro has two options for stands including the beefier Stand+ or the more travel-friendly Espresso Case.

The Espresso 15 Pro encompasses nearly all the qualities I desire in a premium portable monitor. It boasts above-average brightness, a stylish yet durable design, and an incredibly straightforward setup process. Moreover, it includes useful features such as Glide and touch support for Mac devices, enhancing the overall user experience. Coupled with a variety of accessories, it can adapt seamlessly to almost any situation.

While I would appreciate a higher refresh rate, the absence of one is not a major flaw. Incorporating it could potentially increase the price, and since the 15 Pro already starts at $699 with the monitor and Stand+, the added cost may not justify the benefits. Nonetheless, if you seek a highly portable monitor that performs admirably in both travel and home settings, few displays can rival the Espresso 15 Pro.
