People Can Fly, the renowned developer behind Outriders and Gears of War: Judgement, made a significant announcement on Monday regarding the cessation of development on two of its highly anticipated games. This decision stemmed from ongoing challenges with its publisher and an inability to secure the necessary funding for continued development. In the wake of this announcement, CEO Sebastian Wojciechowski revealed on LinkedIn that the studio will undergo a substantial restructuring process, which will involve “significantly regrouping” its resources and “scaling down” the size of its development teams.
While the statement did not specify the number of staff members who will be affected by these cuts, it explicitly identified Project Gemini and Project Bifrost as the two titles that will no longer be pursued. The cancellation of Gemini was attributed to the game’s publisher failing to deliver a publishing agreement and not providing clarity on its intentions regarding the future of the project. Additionally, without the essential publishing deal or the financial resources to continue work on Bifrost, which was intended to be a self-published VR game, the studio had no choice but to cancel this project as well.
This recent development marks another chapter in People Can Fly‘s history of project cancellations and team reductions. Back in December 2024, the studio announced it was halting development on a game titled Project Victoria while also scaling down the team working on Bifrost. During that same period, People Can Fly disclosed that Square Enix was responsible for publishing Gemini, which adds another layer to the complexities faced by the studio.
Previously, People Can Fly collaborated with Square Enix on the release of Outriders, which has since garnered a dedicated fan base but was initially perceived as a modest commercial success at its launch. Despite the recent cuts and the cancellation of two games, People Can Fly remains optimistic and continues to work on multiple exciting projects. Among these is Project Delta, which is being developed for Sony, and Gears of War: E-Day, a co-development effort with Xbox studio The Coalition.
