Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Gets His Own TV Miniseries

Exciting news has emerged: Oswald is set to star in his very own TV miniseries.

During the recent D23 fan event, Disney unveiled plans for a live-action animated three-part miniseries featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, which will be available on Disney+.

This innovative “Oswald” miniseries is crafted by Jon Favreau, who takes on the roles of writer, director, and executive producer. The star-studded cast includes renowned comedy talents like Albert Brooks, Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Ryder Allen.

The journey to securing his own Disney series has been a lengthy one for Oswald.

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was born in 1927, the brainchild of Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for Universal Pictures. Throughout the late 1920s, Oswald graced over two dozen theatrical short films, all animated by Walt Disney Studios. in a turn of events in 1928, Universal seized control of the Oswald character from Disney. This pivotal moment led Disney to create a new character that audiences would come to know as Mickey Mouse.

The rest of the story is well-documented. Mickey Mouse quickly eclipsed Oswald in popularity, causing the latter to fade into relative obscurity after a few last appearances in the 1950s.

In a surprising twist, Disney reclaimed the rights to Oswald in 2006 through a remarkable trade with NBCUniversal. This agreement allowed Disney to regain the Oswald trademark along with rights to the animated films from the Disney era. In return, NBCUniversal acquired the services of play-by-play announcer Al Michaels for NBC Sunday Night Football. Since then, Oswald has made cameo appearances across various animated shows, Disney theme parks, and video games, including the popular Epic Mickey series.

Now, Oswald is poised to shine in his very own Disney miniseries, which will beautifully combine hand-drawn 2D animation with live-action elements.
