Engaging with shonen anime offers a unique perspective, akin to observing the world through a magnifying glass. As you delve deeper, the broader landscape often becomes less visible. In this realm, the narratives typically center around male protagonists, relegating female characters to supporting roles. While there are notable exceptions with strong female figures making waves, their moments of triumph often come with an implicit “finally,” rising to match their male counterparts without overshadowing them. This pattern is evident in characters like Sakura Haruno from Naruto and Orihime Inoue in the latest episodes of Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War, as well as numerous instances in One Piece.
Fortunately, the TV special One Piece Heroines addresses this male-centric narrative trend, granting the female members of the Straw Hat crew the spotlight they deserve in their own standalone story. This refreshing approach sets a positive precedent for the genre.
We cannot stress enough: whether you are revisiting the original anime, diving into the manga’s extensive collection of over 1,000 episodes and chapters, exploring Netflix’s live-action adaptation, or anticipating WIT Studio’s streamlined remake, now is an excellent time to immerse yourself in One Piece. If Toei Animation’s previous special, One Piece Fan Letter, served as a heartfelt tribute to the fandom akin to the heartwarming film Look Back, then One Piece Heroines captures the essence of a blend between The Devil Wears Prada and The Phantom Thread. This special, inspired by the light novel spin-off from Jun Esaka and Sayaka Suwa, features Nami and Nico Robin teaming up for an audacious heist at a glamorous fashion show.
At first glance, their story might seem typical of women-led narratives. the spark that ignites their collaboration is surprisingly clever and thought-provoking. A light spoiler follows. Nami purchases a pair of shoes from an upscale fashion brand known for creating stylish footwear tailored to women’s needs. This brand enjoys popularity among adventurous women who desire fashionable yet functional shoes. After Nami injures her toe in a fast-fashion variant of the brand, she encounters a talented female cobbler who works as an assistant to the brand’s owner, who expresses interest in having Nami model for the runway.
As it turns out, the owner is linked to a series of pirate jewel heists, including a recent theft from the Straw Hats’ ship and Nami’s personal collection. Nami, with her charismatic charm, persuades her companion Nico Robin to embark on an Ocean’s Eleven-style heist, all while empowering her new friend to embrace her creativity and confidence in crafting her own combat-ready footwear, allowing her to take ownership of her identity.
This delightful 23-minute special captivates viewers with its charm and thoughtful storytelling. A standout feature was its commitment to showcasing a “ladies’ night” theme, deliberately downplaying the presence of Luffy, Sanji, and Zoro during their brief appearances, allowing the female characters to truly shine. This aspect felt like a nostalgic nod to the era when filler episodes were a staple in anime.
Today, filler episodes—which One Piece has plenty of—are less common. While this shift is generally welcomed, as prolonged filler arcs can stall narrative progress, these episodes also provided opportunities for creative storytelling and deeper character exploration. They allowed viewers to connect with their favorite characters outside of the high-stakes battles against world-ending threats. After all, without filler, we wouldn’t have witnessed the iconic moment of Goku and Piccolo taking a driver’s education test in Dragon Ball Z.
The special also highlights a recurring challenge faced by One Piece: its unique visual style, characterized by exaggerated proportions that often lead to some critique of the female characters’ designs. While these stylized portrayals are a hallmark of the series, they can deter potential fans seeking more realistic character representations. The treatment of women in the series sometimes feels excessive, which is unfortunate, as One Piece boasts some of the most innovative fashion designs in shonen anime, rivaling classics like Yu Yu Hakusho and JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Much of this can be attributed to male-driven character design. Heroines stands out due to its narrative crafted by women, infusing the special with a refreshing perspective. The plot intertwines fashion with the characters’ strengths and endearing qualities, making it a standout anime spin-off.
In a time when fans are advocating for more women-led anime, without facing backlash referencing older series as justification for the status quo, One Piece Heroines serves as an inspiring example. It demonstrates that creating engaging stories where previously sidelined female characters take center stage is not only possible but essential. I hope Toei recognizes this opportunity and adapts more tales from Esaka and Suwa’s light novel series, allowing characters like Boa Hancock and Vivi Nefertari to join the adventure.
