The Trump administration is set to implement automatic installation of its White House app on the work phones of government employees, as reported by Government Executive. The initiative will reportedly begin with at least one agency as early as next week. Internal emails reviewed by Gov Exec indicate that the installation plan aims to cover “all government-furnished mobile phones within the executive branch.”
Launched two months ago, the White House app is designed to deliver “unfiltered, real-time updates directly from the source.” Users of the app will encounter a range of content, including press releases, official media, selected news articles, and diverse statistics. Notably, the app features an option to “Text President Trump,” which effectively enrolls users in a marketing campaign. It remains uncertain if the app will provide additional functionalities specifically for federal employees; however, Gov Exec has confirmed that the version installed on government phones will mirror the public version.
Some cybersecurity experts express concerns regarding potential privacy risks associated with the app. Reports from its initial release in March indicated that the app utilized location tracking and raised questions about its potential to share personal data with third-party entities. With the app being installed on government employee devices, experts warn that it could introduce further security vulnerabilities.
