One of the most talked-about aspects of the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct presentation was the pricing, which many believe may deter potential buyers from adopting the new console immediately. I completely understand this perspective. A starting price of $450 for a Nintendo console, especially one that follows a system originally launched at $300 eight years ago, certainly raises eyebrows. While tariffs may play a role in this steep pricing, it does not change the fact that the Switch 2 is undeniably expensive for many consumers.
Despite the high cost, my enthusiasm for the Switch 2 remains strong. After spending several hours immersed in gameplay during a press demonstration, I found that behind all the discussions about price and hardware features lies a console that represents a significant advancement over its predecessor in nearly every aspect. Here are three compelling reasons why I firmly believe the Nintendo Switch 2 is a worthwhile investment, even if you decide to wait before making the purchase.

3 Compelling Reasons Why the Nintendo Switch 2 is Essential for Gamers
Yes, I recognize that the price is substantial. However, let’s take a closer look at what you are getting for that investment.
1. Experience Significant Performance Enhancements with Switch 2
A major reason for the long-standing demand for a Nintendo Switch 2 is the growing realization that the original Switch simply cannot keep up with modern gaming demands. Even first-party games, which traditionally perform well on Nintendo systems, have shown signs of struggle and subpar performance in recent years. This is not an encouraging trend for gamers who expect seamless performance.
While I await expert analyses to quantify the Switch 2’s performance compared to its competitors, my firsthand experience indicates that this new console is considerably more powerful. For instance, classic titles like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild were showcased in their “Nintendo Switch 2 Edition” format during the event. Witnessing this beloved game run at a stunningly high resolution and fluid frame rates was a genuine moment of excitement for me. Although it may seem outdated, given that the game was initially designed for the Wii U, the original Switch often struggled to run it smoothly. With the Switch 2, the performance is remarkably improved, demonstrating its capability to handle demanding graphics effortlessly.

Moreover, the lineup of new games exclusive to the Switch 2 is incredibly impressive. Titles like Mario Kart World are visually stunning, rich in character, and feature expansive worlds that offer seamless exploration. Similarly, Donkey Kong: Bananza introduces a fresh, dynamic design for our favorite ape, allowing players to interact with an environment that can be destructively altered in real-time. These capabilities were beyond the reach of the original Switch, particularly when it came to maintaining high resolutions and smooth frame rates during gameplay.
2. Enjoy an Enhanced Gaming Experience with Switch 2’s New Display
The previous non-OLED version of the Switch featured a modest 6.2-inch display with a resolution of just 720p. While this was acceptable in 2017 and for several years thereafter, it now feels outdated and somewhat lackluster. Certain games, like Xenoblade Chronicles 2, even struggled to achieve 720p in handheld mode, resulting in blurry visuals that significantly detracted from the gaming experience. Coupled with the notorious issue of stick drift, the allure of a portable Nintendo console was somewhat diminished.

While it remains to be seen if Nintendo has adequately addressed the stick drift issue, the performance upgrade pairs remarkably well with a new 7.9-inch 1080p LCD display boasting a 120Hz refresh rate. During my time testing the console, I observed that some games, such as Metroid Prime 4, appeared to run smoothly at a consistent 120 frames per second. Additionally, the new display supports HDR for even greater visual fidelity.
With all these enhancements, combined with redesigned Joy-Con controllers that fit comfortably in adult-sized hands, I can envision myself using the Switch 2 in handheld mode more frequently. Of course, battery life will be a crucial factor to monitor moving forward.
3. Will Switch 2 Finally Deliver a Reliable Online Experience?
I must admit, this point might be a bit of a stretch, considering Nintendo’s historical challenges with internet functionality. For nearly two decades, trying to engage in online play with friends on Nintendo platforms has often been frustrating. While there have been improvements during the Switch era, the glaring absence of social features has been a significant drawback.
The introduction of the new “C” button on the right Joy-Con unlocks a live chat feature called GameChat, which resembles Discord but tailored for the Nintendo ecosystem. This feature allows you to communicate with friends who may be engaged in different games while also enabling screen sharing—albeit in a rather choppy manner. At least Nintendo is transparent about this in their promotional materials. Nevertheless, it’s encouraging to see Nintendo making an effort; perhaps this time, their endeavors will yield positive results.
Most notably, the Switch 2’s dock includes a built-in ethernet port, emphasizing the importance of wired connections for improved online play. This move is a welcome addition for gamers who prioritize a stable internet experience.
Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 will commence on April 9.
