WhatsApp has recently announced a significant update focused on enhancing user security by preventing scams. This update introduces a new feature designed specifically to protect users from potential swindles. From now on, individuals will receive notifications whenever they are added to a new WhatsApp group by someone who is not in their contacts list.
This safety feature will provide essential information about the group chat, including the total number of members, the identification of any members who are contacts, and the date when the chat was initiated. Additionally, it includes practical reminders on how to steer clear of scams. Users have the option to leave the group directly from the notification without having to access the chat, or they can review the chat to determine if it is a group they want to engage with.
WhatsApp has stated that it will “continue to test new approaches” for sending similar alerts for individual direct messages within its platform. Although these new tools are still under development, the company has indicated it is actively exploring methods to capture scammers who initiate contact on other platforms before transitioning to WhatsApp for conversations.
In addition to the in-app safety measures, WhatsApp has reported that it has identified and blocked numerous accounts involved in fraudulent activities. During the first half of 2025, the company revealed that it detected and banned over 6.8 million accounts associated with scam centers.
The Federal Trade Commission has consistently published reports over the years highlighting the widespread nature of scams on social media platforms.
