As Rockstar Games reportedly invests around $1.5 billion in the development of Grand Theft Auto VI—potentially making it the priciest video game in history—another title has already surpassed the billion-dollar mark in funding. Star Citizen has successfully garnered over $1 billion from more than 6.5 million backers.
Star Citizen debuted in 2012 through a Kickstarter campaign with an initial goal of $500,000. Developer Cloud Imperium Games exceeded expectations by raising over $2.1 million, with a separate campaign later bringing in $4.1 million. The project achieved a crowdfunding milestone in 2014, breaking records by securing over $55 million in funding.
By the time Star Citizen entered early access in 2017, the total amount raised had exceeded $170 million. Nearly nine years later, however, the space combat simulator remains in alpha development.
Chris Roberts, game director and CEO of Cloud Imperium, shared insights with Variety, stating, “This level of funding wouldn’t be feasible under traditional game publishers or private equity. They typically lack the time and patience. Our supporters want to witness the creation of an expansive world, and as we progress, that vision becomes more tangible.” He expressed confidence that even after achieving what they term ‘1.0’, the universe will continue to evolve, offering players opportunities for exploration and camaraderie.
Despite facing multiple delays, the highly-anticipated single-player spin-off Squadron 42 is still expected to launch this year, as indicated on the game’s website. A specific release date has not yet been confirmed. Nevertheless, Roberts is eager for players to experience it and hinted that the launch might be closer than anticipated.
Roberts elaborated, “My vision is for players to be at the center of a massive blockbuster experience, seamlessly transitioning between storytelling and interactive gameplay. The level of detail, scale, and scope is unparalleled in gaming. It feels truly epic, and I am excited for everyone to see it—especially since we are in the final stages of development, and everything is coming together beautifully.”
