In the ongoing rivalry between X and Threads to dominate the market for real-time social media interactions, the realm of sports emerges as a pivotal area of competition. Consequently, both platforms are intensifying their efforts to enhance sports engagement within their applications, recognizing the importance of catering to the passionate fan base.
X has recently taken significant steps in this arena by launching a new NBA Portal. This innovative in-app feature serves as a dedicated hub where basketball enthusiasts can stay informed about the latest NBA news and headlines, perfectly timed for the upcoming playoffs that are generating excitement among fans.
X elaborates on this exciting development by stating:
“X is solidifying its position as the premier platform for sports fans worldwide, collaborating with the NBA to unveil the NBA Portal just as the 2025 postseason commences later this month. This immersive portal will provide basketball fans with essential information, including real-time game scores, statistics, highlights, and curated content from teams, players, media outlets, and creators.”
It’s important to clarify that while the NBA Portal will guide fans on where to watch live games, it will not host any game broadcasts directly.
The NBA Portal is designed to mirror the functionality of the NFL Portal that X launched last November, providing a centralized location for fans to access league news and updates.
Similar to its counterpart for the NFL, the NBA Portal will feature a live feed showcasing the latest posts related to the NBA, alongside dedicated sections for ongoing games, current standings, and player statistics.
This activation is a positive move that will undoubtedly enhance the engagement of NBA fans with relevant content, although many may already have established habits regarding how they interact with the app.
One of X’s key advantages lies in its established user base. Despite some users opting to switch to Threads following Elon Musk’s takeover of the platform, a significant number of vibrant communities remain active on X. Given that sports remain one of the most talked-about topics on the platform, this could be a crucial factor in sustaining X‘s engagement metrics.
In response, Meta is ramping up its initiatives to capture the sports segment on Threads.
Recently, it announced a strategic partnership with UFC, positioning Threads as a central platform for upcoming UFC social media engagements.
Meta has also reported a significant uptick in sports-related discussions on Threads, with creators focused on sports collectively gaining nearly a million followers in just the last two months, indicating a growing interest in this area.
If Meta can successfully attract more leagues to prioritize Threads and draw in additional sports communities and influencers, it could potentially capture a substantial portion of the user engagement currently seen on X. This shift could set Threads on a path to emerge as the leading platform for real-time social interactions.
However, Threads still faces challenges, particularly with its algorithmic resistance to political content, which has limited its effectiveness for following breaking news. As the platform evolves and aims to enhance live engagement experiences for upcoming UFC events, it’s likely that other leagues will take notice and consider similar strategies.

While I don’t foresee a mass migration of sports fans away from X in the immediate future, if Threads can enhance its coverage and attract more sports influencers, it could pose a significant challenge for X in retaining its user base.
