Magic Mouse Makeover: What to Expect in the Coming Year

The Magic Mouse has remained relatively unchanged since its initial launch in 2009, primarily undergoing minor tweaks such as the transition from AA batteries to a more convenient USB-C port. However, exciting news is on the horizon as Apple is reportedly gearing up for a significant redesign. According to Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple has begun developing prototypes aimed at modernizing the Magic Mouse to better meet contemporary user needs and expectations.

While many users appreciate the sleek design and innovative gesture controls of the Magic Mouse, persistent issues like its uncomfortable ergonomics and inconvenient charging port have drawn criticism over the years. The exact features of the upcoming redesign remain under wraps, but it is anticipated that Apple will address these longstanding concerns. Gurman suggests that Apple aims to create a version of the Magic Mouse that is not only more relevant but also resolves the notorious charging port dilemma. Although this redesign sounds promising, we may have to wait a while longer, as Gurman estimates it could take between 12 to 18 months before the new Magic Mouse hits the market.

In addition to the Magic Mouse, the newsletter sheds light on another intriguing development: the upcoming AirTag that Apple is reportedly set to release next year. Building upon earlier insights, Gurman highlights that this next-generation AirTag will feature an upgraded chip and a more secure, tamper-resistant design. Notably, the new tracker is expected to integrate “a new ultrawide band chip comparable to the one introduced in the iPhone 15,” which could significantly enhance its functionality by tripling its detection range through Precision Finding.
