Since its launch, Apple’s AirTag has emerged as an essential tool for many users, providing reliable tracking solutions for belongings. However, as its popularity soared, so did the concerns regarding its potential misuse, particularly in cases of stalking. Reports have surfaced indicating that some individuals have used AirTags inappropriately, raising significant privacy issues. In response to these alarming reports, Apple is taking steps to enhance the privacy features of the upcoming second-generation AirTag. According to a report by Mark Gurman in this week’s newsletter, the tech giant is focused on making these devices significantly more tamper-proof.
The anticipated release of the second-generation AirTag is expected around mid-next year, as per Gurman’s insights. Notably, this new version will incorporate design modifications that make the removal of the speaker more difficult, addressing one of the primary concerns regarding unauthorized tracking. While Apple has already introduced sound alerts to notify users of the presence of an unknown AirTag nearby, the ease of speaker removal has been a loophole. Along with these privacy enhancements, the new AirTag is set to feature improvements in tracking range and an upgraded onboard wireless chip, enhancing its overall functionality. Aesthetically, users should expect the new AirTag to maintain a similar look to the existing model, ensuring familiarity.
