Olandria Shares Her Experience of Hate After Leaving the ‘Love Island USA’ Villa
Olandria, who captured the hearts of viewers throughout the summer and was lovingly dubbed “the glue of the villa” by her fellow Islanders, quickly emerged as a fan favorite. Her relatable and genuine energy resonated deeply with the audience, from her trending romantic pairing with Nicolandria to the consistent support she received through viewer voting to keep her on the show. However, as her visibility increased, so did the public scrutiny she faced.
As she navigates her new reality outside the villa, Olandria candidly discussed her challenges in an interview with Variety, revealing the harsh realities of experiencing racism and microaggressions since her time on the show.
“It’s difficult. I’m not going to lie,” she expressed. “I heard there was even a meme comparing me to George Floyd and Huda to an officer. That’s a very sensitive topic for the Black community. It’s disgusting, to say the least. I don’t understand how you take a love show and make a comment like that. I was even receiving death threats. My family was getting death threats. It shouldn’t be like that at all. I just don’t agree with it.”
Chelley Steps Back into the Online World and Addresses Ongoing Criticism
In a similar vein, her villa companion Chelley has also encountered significant backlash, as both were unjustly labeled “mean girls” for establishing their boundaries within the show. Despite their authentic friendship and vibrant personalities, public perception has not always been forgiving. The shocking elimination of Chelley and Ace from the villa left many fans reeling, prompting both stars to take a much-needed hiatus from social media platforms. Following their break, the duo returned to the digital scene, and in her first post, Chelley took a moment to express gratitude to everyone who stood by her during these challenging times.
“To those who’ve stood with me since the beginning, to my new fans, to every person — whether white, Black, purple, yellow — who has shown nothing but love, thank you,” she wrote. “To the people who used their platforms not just to recap a show but to speak truthfully about the deeper realities Black women face, your words — for holding the line of truth with me and for me in times where hate seemed stronger than usual. Know that your love has towered over the hate. It’s carried me, held me, and helped me find so much grace and happiness in my heart. Because of you, I never lost sight of who I am. I stand for love and peace, never hate.”
Huda Speaks Out Against Online Hate Directed at Fellow ‘Love Island USA’ Cast Members
When discussing her evolving friendships with Olandria, Chelley, and Amaya, Huda openly addressed the connections they share and the troubling online hate they have been enduring.
“I still love Olandria,” she affirmed. “If I’m not hating her, I don’t think anyone else should be either. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but there are definitely lines that get crossed. I don’t condone hate. I don’t condone bullying… people’s safety is at risk. And the last thing I want is for anyone to feel unsafe or face backlash because of me. That’s ridiculous.”
Additionally, she addressed her sentiments toward Chelley, remarking:
“Even with Chelley, we’re not the closest. But I do wish her the best. I don’t think anyone should be receiving any form of hatred at all.”
Celebrating the Community Love Beyond the Villa
Despite the backlash faced by some of the Love Island cast members, the outpouring of support from celebrities and brands outside the villa has been overwhelmingly positive. Numerous celebrities, including Marsai Martin, Ryan Destiny, and others, have utilized their platforms to react to the unfolding drama of the show each week. The rapper GloRilla also showcased her support, posting on X: “I luv Chelley. She can do no wrong.”
Meanwhile, after sharing joyous moments with the Islanders in the villa, Megan Thee Stallion felt the need to clarify her position, reaffirming her love for both Olandria and Chelley after encountering criticism for previously declaring her allegiance to “Team Huda” during an interview.
