A 10-year-old boy has no recollection of the dramatic rescue that occurred when a massive wave swept him off his feet while he was in ankle-deep water. This past month, a courageous teen lifeguard saved him from the relentless waves along the California coastline. Footage of this heart-stopping moment quickly gained traction online, going viral almost immediately.

In-Depth Look at the Lifeguard’s Daring Rescue
The rescue video captured 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams holding on to 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai as powerful waves crashed around them. They disappeared from sight briefly, only to reappear moments later as the water receded. This incredible act of bravery was viewed globally, even attracting the attention of President Donald Trump.
Ryder Williams recounted that he noticed Nathaniel losing his balance in the turbulent water. The conditions were too dangerous to use a rescue tube effectively, and Nathaniel lost consciousness, going limp. Together, they endured several more towering waves until a fellow lifeguard arrived to assist and brought them both back to safety, according to Williams’ statement following the event.

What Does Nathaniel Remember About the Life-Saving Incident?
Nathaniel was enjoying a vacation with his mother on July 25 at Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz, located about 60 miles from San Francisco. Although he expresses gratitude for the lifeguard’s actions, Nathaniel shared with the Associated Press that his memory of the event is quite limited. After being knocked over by the waves, he stated that the next thing he recalled was the lifeguards reaching for him.
“I told him I was thankful he saved my life,” Nathaniel shared with the Associated Press from his father’s home in Dallas.
Regarding his experience during the rescue, Nathaniel mentioned, “I think I have a bruise from him holding me so tight.” He also noted that he experienced some breathing difficulties for a few days and had a sore back. Despite these minor issues, he is otherwise recovering well.
Nathaniel’s Father Reflects on the Rescue
Nathaniel has since watched the footage of the rescue. Like his father, he is in awe of the powerful California waves and the courage displayed by all involved in the rescue effort.
“He was two seconds away from dying,” remarked Nathaniel’s father, Sumit Rai. “If Ryder hadn’t reached him in time, he would have been swept another 15 to 20 feet out to sea, at which point visibility would have been lost, making a rescue nearly impossible.”
Both Nathaniel and his father had the opportunity to converse with Ryder and his dad. “It turns out we share many common interests, making it feel like a small world,” Sumit Rai noted.
