Earlier this year, Toyota introduced its first three-row electric SUV, the Highlander EV. Now, it is Lexus‘ turn to enter this competitive market with the highly anticipated TZ, which features an upscale design, accommodations for up to six passengers, and an impressive driving range of approximately 300 miles. This luxurious offering aims to cater to families looking for both comfort and performance in an electric vehicle.
The TZ shares its foundation with the Highlander EV and the Subaru Getaway, utilizing Toyota’s e-TNGA platform. Customers can choose between two battery options, a 76.9kWh or a 95.8kWh pack, paired with the advanced Direct4 AWD system. While Lexus has not disclosed detailed specifications about the power output, we anticipate around 400 horsepower or more, depending on the selected configuration. Likewise, although we await formal range data from the EPA, Lexus estimates that a TZ equipped with the larger 95kWh battery could achieve a range of approximately 300 miles on a single charge.
With a length of 200.8 inches, the TZ is slightly longer than the Highlander EV, featuring a robust exterior design characterized by strong lines and Lexus’ signature spindle grille. Additional features include Dynamic Rear Steering, allowing for up to four degrees of steering adjustment that enhances maneuverability at low speeds and stabilizes the vehicle at higher velocities. However, the TZ’s 400-volt architecture may not impress, as it supports charging speeds up to only 150kW, resulting in a charging time from 10 to 80 percent of roughly 35 minutes. Fortunately, the vehicle is equipped with a native NACS port, and for those moments when you need to recharge your devices, Lexus offers a dedicated accessory adapter that connects to an AC inlet located in the cargo area.
Inside the TZ, the infotainment system centers around a large 14-inch display, complemented by a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster for the driver’s convenience. Lexus has also integrated a Smart Digital Key+ feature, enabling you to unlock the vehicle using your smartphone or smartwatch, even if the device’s battery is depleted. Beyond the base infotainment setup, the TZ is compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, ensuring seamless connectivity for all users.
The TZ shares similarities in platform and exterior design with the Highlander EV and Subaru Getaway, prompting Lexus to emphasize the interior as a key differentiator. The company asserts that the TZ boasts the quietest cabin among its SUVs, including both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) models. This commitment to tranquility appears to be a primary design objective, as Lexus mentions ‘quiet’ eight times in its official press release. The TZ also incorporates various sustainable materials, such as forged bamboo panels, plant-based UltraSuede, and recycled aluminum in components like the roof rails and tonneau cover frame.
As of now, we await official details regarding the TZ’s pricing, availability, configurations, and trim levels. Lexus plans to release this information as we approach the vehicle’s anticipated launch date later this year, generating excitement for this luxury electric offering.
