In-Stock Availability for Consoles and Games

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 is now officially available for purchase in the United States, offering gamers an exciting opportunity to experience the latest in gaming technology. Priced at $450, this innovative console became available for sale at midnight ET on June 5, with a variety of retailers providing options for both online and in-store purchases. As expected, online stock was quickly depleted, and as of Thursday evening, availability remains quite limited.

Interestingly, it seems that customers have had a bit more success when visiting local retail outlets in person. While there’s no guarantee of finding one, several Engadget team members successfully purchased their Switch 2 at nearby Target and GameStop locations, despite not having pre-ordered the console.

If you’re struggling to locate the Switch 2 in physical stores, your best chance for an online purchase appears to be through Target. The retailer has announced plans to resume online sales in the “early morning” on Friday, June 6, although a specific time has yet to be confirmed.

Walmart launched online sales at midnight on June 5, but both the standalone console and Nintendo’s Mario Kart World bundle are currently out of stock according to our latest updates. As the largest retailer globally, Walmart also offers the console at its physical stores. However, inventory is limited and varies by location, so it may be beneficial to check nearby stores for availability.

Target started selling the Switch 2 in-store on June 5. Although supplies are reported to be limited, some locations still seem to have units in stock as of Thursday evening. For instance, Engadget’s Billy Steele successfully purchased the console at a Target outside of Greensboro, North Carolina around 4:15 PM ET on Thursday.

The retailer has indicated that it will replenish its online inventory in the “early morning” on Friday, June 6, while supplies last. This may offer the next best opportunity to obtain the Switch 2 without needing to visit a physical store.

GameStop hosted launch events on Wednesday and is promoting in-store availability, although this will differ by location. Engadget’s Cherlynn Low managed to purchase the console without a pre-order at a GameStop in the New York City area early Thursday morning. That specific store had just under 80 units available, but the manager informed Low that inventory levels would vary at other locations based on local population.

Currently, the Switch 2 is out of stock on the GameStop website. A $625 bundle featuring Mario Kart World, a microSD Express card, and other accessories has fluctuated in availability more than the standard models, though it is currently sold out. The listing briefly reappeared around 2:30 PM ET, making it worthwhile to keep an eye on if you’re willing to pay the extra price. Meanwhile, the base console and Mario Kart bundle now redirect to a “Find a Store” page.

Best Buy held midnight launch events and indicated that limited stock would be available at its retail locations starting June 5. However, the console is not being sold online during the launch week, which may limit options for some consumers.

Membership-based retailers might also provide opportunities to purchase the Mario Kart World bundle, which includes a 12-month Switch Online membership at Costco. Additionally, Sam’s Club has offered a bundle without the membership. Note that a membership is required to check stock at these retailers. We’ve also observed online stock available at BJ’s, but those listings are currently unavailable based on our latest update.

Verizon briefly had the Switch 2 available on Thursday morning, but that stock quickly vanished, and only customers with Verizon service were eligible to place orders.

As it stands, Amazon is the only major retailer that has not listed the Switch 2 on its website. The company did not offer pre-orders for the console, leaving uncertainty about when it may become available for sale.

Newegg has had the Switch 2 listed on its site for several weeks, but sales have not yet commenced.

Across these retailers, we’ve generally noticed that the Mario Kart World bundle tends to be available in larger quantities online compared to the base console, which is priced $50 lower. Given that Mario Kart is the flagship launch title for the Switch 2 and retails for $80 separately, this might not be the worst scenario for potential buyers.

Nintendo continues to sell the Switch 2 exclusively through an invite system. To qualify, you must have been a Switch Online member for a minimum of 12 months and logged at least 50 hours of gameplay on the original Switch as of April 2. If you meet these criteria, putting your name on the list could be worthwhile, but do not expect immediate results; many who registered in April have yet to receive an invite, and shipments for those who did order still haven’t been dispatched.

Below, you can find a comprehensive list of every Switch 2 retail listing we could uncover. Please keep in mind that this list is intended as a reference guide rather than an exhaustive rundown of every location where the device is currently available.
