Angelina Jolie Shares Emotional Insights as Her Sons Experience Her Vulnerability on Set
Angelina Jolie has revealed that her two eldest children, Maddox and Pax, recently witnessed a profound new side of her while on the set of her latest film, Maria. This experience not only allowed her sons to see their mother in a professional light but also exposed them to her emotional depth and struggles as an actress, which is often a concealed aspect of her life.
In a candid interview with BBC News, Jolie reflected on the unique experience of having her sons, Maddox, 23, and Pax, 21, work as production assistants on the Netflix drama, Maria. She revealed that this was the first time they observed her expressing substantial emotional pain, something she typically keeps hidden from them. This moment was significant as it not only highlighted her vulnerability but also strengthened their understanding of her as both a mother and a professional.
In the film, Jolie portrays the iconic Greek opera singer Maria Callas, a role that required her to delve deep into complex emotions. While on set, Maddox and Pax had the opportunity to witness their mother embody this challenging character, gaining firsthand insight into the highs and lows of her acting journey, as well as the dedication required for such a demanding role. Their presence not only made the experience more personal for Jolie but also allowed her sons to appreciate the intricacies involved in filmmaking.

“The character [Callas] carries a lot of emotional pain, and my sons have seen me go through difficult times in life, but they had never witnessed me expressing such raw emotions that a parent typically shields from their children,” Jolie shared, revealing how this experience bridged the gap between her public persona and her personal struggles.
“They were there to witness some of that vulnerability, but also offered support by giving me hugs or bringing me cups of tea during the intense scenes,” Jolie continued, highlighting the compassion and connection that flourished between them during this challenging phase of filming.
The Oscar-winning actress expressed that having her children see her in a state of emotional turmoil was a compelling opportunity to be open with them about her feelings, fostering a new level of communication and understanding. She described it as a more honest and deeper way to connect with her sons, enriching their relationship in the process.
During her conversation with BBC News, Maria director Pablo Larraín praised Maddox and Pax for their hard work on set, describing them as “very busy” and commending them for their professionalism. This recognition not only speaks to their dedication but also reflects Jolie’s influence on their work ethic and commitment to their roles.
Jolie also shared that her eldest son recorded her while she was rehearsing her singing, saying, “so he was with me in my early horrible days,” which emphasizes the supportive environment her children provided. This experience not only strengthened their bond but also allowed them to be part of her creative journey.
“It is always beneficial for your children to see their mother not only succeed but also struggle, to swear, fight, fail, and try again,” Jolie emphasized. “This demonstrates an essential and beautiful lesson about resilience and the human experience, which is invaluable for their growth.”
Jolie, who shares Maddox and Pax with Brad Pitt, also has Zahara, 19, Shiloh, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 16. In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she revealed that her eldest sons had witnessed her go through “heavy times” while filming Maria, noting that they had never seen her cry like she did during this production.
“Being a parent for 23 years has taught me that the most beautiful aspect of parenting is realizing that you are not the center of your child’s universe,” she reflected. “Leaving the set, focusing on something for someone else, that is your true life and your real world, which is a substantial part of who you are.”
“I’ve never had a set where my family wasn’t allowed to be present because I was focused on my work — that’s just not who I am. You can climb over me or come to visit,” she continued, adding that it truly meant a lot to her to have Maddox and Pax on set, highlighting the importance of family support in her career.
However, Jolie admitted that one of the more intense experiences during the filming was when her children witnessed her expressing profound pain. This moment served as a poignant reminder of the emotional toll that acting can take, and it highlighted the authenticity she brings to her roles.
“As parents, we often try to shield our children from the depths of our pain and sadness. For them to witness me express such emotions was likely the first time they heard me cry like that,” she said, adding humorously, “That’s usually reserved for the shower!” This moment of levity underscores the balance Jolie tries to maintain between her public persona and her private life.
