Over the last two years, Universal Pictures has strategically chosen CinemaCon as the platform to unveil the initial glimpses of its highly awaited adaptation of Wicked. Now, as anticipation builds for the second and final installment, the excitement has reached new heights. Director Jon M. Chu, producer Marc Platt, along with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, gathered to present the first footage from the eagerly awaited Wicked: For Good. Although the footage isn’t available online just yet, the highlights of this thrilling reveal are worth discussing.
The scene opens with a dramatic glass breaking sound, revealing what seems to be a brand new apartment where Glinda resides in the enchanting Emerald City. She steps out onto her expansive balcony and calls out, “Elphaba Thropp, I know you’re out here, come in before the monkeys see you.” The camera captures her from multiple angles before the scene transitions, and suddenly, Elphaba appears, heightening the sense of magic and anticipation.
In a contrasting setting, Elphaba has created a sanctuary for herself deep within the woods. As she reflects on the escalating propaganda targeting her character, the audience sees monkeys soaring through the skies of Oz. Meanwhile, Glinda is adorned with a magnificent crown, as Madame Morrible ominously proclaims that the witch will soon be captured, thanks to Prince Fiyero and his army who are now on her trail. The scene intensifies as Fiyero is depicted riding a horse through the woods, clad in uniform, leading a battalion of soldiers.
In a striking display, the words “Our Wizard Lies” ominously light up the sky. Citizens of the Emerald City march down the streets holding torches, symbolizing their unrest and determination. Glinda makes her way back to the tower from the conclusion of the first film, ascending the stairs with a sense of purpose and nostalgia.
A heartwarming scene unfolds as Glinda and Elphaba sit together on a swing, sharing a tender conversation about the positive impact they can make together. This moment is juxtaposed with a captivating shot of Glinda in a grand, church-like setting, wearing an elegant, flowing, pink gown, followed by a glimpse of Fiyero standing on an altar. This raises the intriguing question: Are they preparing for a wedding?
The footage progresses to reveal Glinda and Elphaba back in the Wizard’s extravagant chamber, surrounded by dazzling, colorful lights, as they indulge in a lively dance. A whimsical moment occurs as someone playfully interacts with a few yellow bricks, adding to the enchanting atmosphere.
The Wizard, now commanding the attention of Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow within his palace, issues a powerful demand: “Bring me the broom of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Following this, the audience is treated to a gripping scene where Fiyero confronts Elphaba with a gun, but in a surprising twist, he redirects it towards the Wizard, showcasing his unwavering loyalty to her.
In an emotional exchange, Elphaba confides in Glinda, saying, “You’re the only friend I ever had.” Glinda playfully retorts, “And I’ve had so many friends,” before they embrace in a moment filled with tears and laughter, highlighting the depth of their friendship.
As the enthralling footage draws to a close, Elphaba stands resolutely, raising her right arm to summon her hat and her left arm to call forth her broom. With an air of determination, she declares, “I’m off to see the Wizard,” leading into breathtaking scenes of her soaring through Oz, evading the monkeys that are in pursuit.
While much of the narrative may seem enigmatic, the trailer is brimming with captivating and intriguing moments that leave audiences craving more. It certainly feels like a teaser that will resonate with viewers when it officially debuts later this summer; however, we must remain patient to see it in its entirety.
Wicked: For Good is set to enchant audiences in theaters on November 21.
