On Saturday, the FBI released an important statement addressing the proliferation of deceptive videos that are circulating as the election approaches. The agency clarified that it is aware of two particularly misleading videos that “falsely claim to be from the FBI regarding election security.” One of these videos made the false assertion that the FBI had “apprehended three linked groups committing ballot fraud,” while the other referenced Kamala Harris’ husband. The FBI has emphasized that both videos contain misleading information and do not reflect reality.
The issue of disinformation has become increasingly serious, especially with the rise of political deepfakes and other deceptive forms of multimedia. As the US presidential election draws near, the FBI reiterated its commitment to combatting this threat in a statement shared on X. They highlighted the following:
The safeguarding of election integrity is among our highest priorities, and the FBI is actively collaborating with state and local law enforcement partners to address election threats and ensure the safety of our communities as Americans exercise their fundamental right to vote. The dissemination of false information about FBI operations not only undermines our democratic process but also seeks to erode public trust in the electoral system.
Just a day prior to the FBI’s statement, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) revealed that they had traced two additional misleading videos back to “Russian influence actors.” One of these videos falsely depicted individuals claiming to be from Haiti and voting illegally across multiple counties in Georgia, raising significant concerns about the impact of foreign interference in the electoral process.
