A breathalyzer measures acetone levels in your breath to assess whether your body is in a state of ketosis.
Smart scales and smartwatches typically utilize bioelectrical impedance to estimate body fat percentage. This method provides a rapid assessment of lean mass, but it may lack precision. The challenge of accurately identifying when your body transitions to burning fat is significantly greater. This highlights the importance of recent advancements in handheld devices designed to measure fat burning more effectively.
A study published in the scientific journal Device, spotlighted by New Scientist, involved researchers led by Andreas Güntner. They developed a handheld breathalyzer capable of determining fat burning by analyzing the acetone concentration in breath samples. The study involved 12 participants and examined their fat-burning states across various dietary and exercise conditions, demonstrating that the breathalyzer produced results closely aligned with those obtained from traditional laboratory tests.
Ketosis, the metabolic state where your body utilizes fat for energy, is identified by measuring either ketones in the blood or acetone in the breath. Both substances are byproducts of the fat conversion process. As noted by New Scientist, acetone measurements are most reliable in controlled laboratory environments, where factors like humidity and breathing patterns can be meticulously managed. The researchers circumvented these challenges by designing a breathalyzer that eliminates excess moisture and contaminants. they developed a companion app to assist users in the breathing process, ensuring accurate sampling. This app not only notified users about the appropriate pressure levels but also optimized the timing of sample collection to closely replicate the accuracy of blood test results.
The device, branded as Nutrion, operates similarly to an earlier model called Lumen, which aimed to detect fat burning through carbon dioxide instead of acetone. Regular metabolic assessments from such devices could serve numerous health applications, ranging from evaluating the effectiveness of GLP-1 therapies to helping athletes optimize their metabolic rates.
