Macaulay Culkin Discusses Family Dynamics and the Impact of Childhood Stardom on Parenting
Macaulay Culkin is candidly reflecting on his transformative journey into fatherhood, shedding light on how his complex relationship with his estranged father has shaped his approach to raising his two sons. As he navigates the challenges of parenting in today’s world, Culkin draws on his past experiences as a child star, emphasizing the importance of nurturing a supportive environment for his children.
During his appearance on the Sibling Revelry podcast alongside hosts Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, the Home Alone actor opened up about the emotional struggles he faced with his father, former stage actor Christopher “Kit” Culkin. Macaulay revealed that he hasn’t communicated with his father in nearly three decades, highlighting the profound impact this estrangement has had on his life and relationships.
“One of my earliest memories of him was [thinking], when I grow up, this is how I am not going to be with my children,” Macaulay shared, reflecting on his upbringing. Now a father to sons Dakota, 3, and Carson, 2, with his fiancée Brenda Song, he is determined to break the cycle and create a nurturing and loving environment for his kids.
He elaborated, “Now that I’ve children of my own, it stirs up a lot of feelings. I often find myself thinking, ‘I can’t believe he was like that.’ My father had all these wonderful and talented children, yet it’s astonishing how disconnected he became.” This realization underscores the stark contrast between his own parenting philosophy and the experiences he endured as a child.

Macaulay discussed the rift with his estranged father, pointing out that this disconnect extends to his siblings as well. He emphasized that his family maintains little to no contact with their dad, showcasing the lasting effects of their childhood experiences.
“He deserves it, too,” Macaulay stated. “He is a man who fathered seven children and now has four grandchildren, yet none of them want anything to do with him.” He candidly expressed that if he were in such a position, he would reflect deeply on his life choices and wonder if he had done something wrong.
“I have more than a suspicion that he doesn’t feel that way,” Macaulay added, highlighting the emotional detachment that seems to characterize their relationship.
Describing his father as “narcissistic” and “crazy,” Macaulay shared his belief that his father harbors resentment towards him, stemming from the fact that his own son’s success eclipsed his former achievements as a performer.
“I think there was a certain amount of resentment directed towards me,” Macaulay articulated. “My father aspired to be an actor himself and had some modest success, even reaching as far as performing as Horus on Broadway and dabbling in ballet.”
“Then suddenly, he has this child who doesn’t resemble him at all; I look very much like my mother,” he continued. “From the start, I was landing lead roles in the ballet company and booking various projects immediately.”
“I think he resented me for that,” Macaulay reflected. “I feel there was a bit of hate towards me because of that, which contributed to his harshness in our relationship.”

Despite the challenges he faced, Macaulay emphasized that these negative experiences have significantly shaped him into the father he is today, imparting valuable lessons he carries into his parenting approach.
“It’s tough, but it has made me the person I am today. I wouldn’t be the father I am now if it weren’t for my past experiences,” he remarked, adding that even during moments of adversity, he maintained a belief that he would emerge victorious from his struggles.
“At the end of the day, I kept thinking, ‘I will win,’ and here I am,” he concluded. “Yes, I am on your show, so clearly I’m a winner.”
When discussing his relationship with his siblings, Macaulay described a strong bond, celebrating brother Kieran Culkin’s recent Oscar win for his performance in A Real Pain as “amazing.”
“Between Kieran and me, we have one Oscar. It’s incredible, right? We also have an Emmy, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Critics’ Choice, and a SAG award,” Macaulay joked, showcasing their achievements in the entertainment industry.
“Rory is quite active in the industry, involved in various indie projects. He’s consistently engaged in unique and eclectic roles,” he continued. “In fact, he probably works more than Kieran and I combined, always putting out new material.”
