Hantavirus Claims Three More Lives, Linked to Gene Hackman’s Wife

The rare hantavirus—which gained notoriety after it tragically claimed the life of Gene Hackman‘s wife—has now taken the lives of additional victims in California, raising concerns about its spread and dangers.

Recently, three individuals in the picturesque town of Mammoth Lakes have died due to hantavirus infection. This disease is particularly alarming as it has also been linked to the death of Betsy Arakawa, the beloved wife of actor Gene Hackman, highlighting the virus’s lethal potential.

This week, the Mono County Health and Human Services Public Health Division announced with great concern the third recorded death due to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS) in Mammoth Lakes, a charming town approximately 330 miles east of San Francisco.

Dr. Tom Boo, the Mono County Public Health Officer, expressed his distress over the latest hantavirus case, labeling it “tragic and alarming.” He voiced his confusion regarding how the deceased individual contracted the virus, emphasizing the need for increased awareness and preventive measures.

As many are aware, Gene and Betsy tragically passed away in their New Mexico residence on February 26. An investigation revealed that Betsy’s cause of death was linked to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe condition caused by exposure to this rare virus.

Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a prominent infectious disease expert and professor at the Keck School of Medicine at USC, provided insights into the rapid onset of hantavirus symptoms. He noted that the virus’s effects can manifest quickly, often resembling a common chest cold, leading to frequent misdiagnoses.

The transmission of hantavirus to humans primarily occurs through contact with the droppings and urine of infected rodents. This risk often increases when individuals engage in cleaning activities in attics or basements where rodent infestations may occur. Dr. Klausner warns that the virus has a staggering fatality rate, claiming the lives of one in three infected individuals.
