“When I first got the news, I was completely stunned, of course, because I did not expect it, and then reality settled in, leading me to feel remarkably calm about whatever the outcome was going to be,” the actor explained. “I can’t quite put it into words, but there was a profound inner calm that enveloped me, and I think that stems from the strength I witnessed in the women of my family as they navigated their own health battles. Their resilience inspired me immensely because they faced their struggles with grace, and I thought to myself, ‘I can handle this too.’ I have experienced an incredible journey in life, surrounded by wonderful people, and I am okay with whatever comes next. This experience has undeniably shifted my perspective.”
Dave also mentioned that his wife, Melissa Bring, and their children devised a very specific plan for addressing his health crisis. Given that his bone marrow test results came back negative, he expressed relief that his “chances of recovery climbed from a low percentage to the 90 percent range. That was indeed a remarkable day.”

Dave discovered his cancer diagnosis in October 2024, and shortly thereafter, he began chemotherapy treatment, as he shared with People. Now that he is well into his treatment protocol, the native of Detroit, Michigan, candidly admitted that he experiences both “good” and “bad” days.
“Some days I feel nauseous and dizzy, while on other days, thanks to the steroids, I experience a surge of energy,” he explained, highlighting the unpredictable nature of his treatment journey.
Approximately a year later, Dave announced that he had successfully overcome his stage 3 non-Hodgkin lymphoma but then learned he had developed a form of tongue cancer, adding another layer to his health narrative.
“This is completely unrelated to the previous cancer I had,” Dave stated during his December 2025 appearance on Today. “In October of this year, I went in for a routine PET scan, and something unusual appeared on the scan. It turned out that I have P16 squamous carcinoma at the base of my tongue. I asked my doctors if this was a consequence of the lymphoma, and they assured me it was ‘totally unrelated.’”
He further explained that he would need to undergo 35 rounds of radiation treatment, which he is expected to complete by December 31, 2025, illustrating the challenges he continues to face.
Despite the daunting news regarding his health, Dave remained optimistic, emphasizing that his prognosis was encouraging.
“The prognosis for P16 squamous carcinoma is very good,” the actor shared. “It has a curability rate exceeding 90 percent. However, what has truly saved my life is the early detection of these issues, not just the first time but the second time as well. Therefore, I strongly encourage everyone to keep up with your health check-ups, including colonoscopies, breast exams, and prostate exams; they can indeed save your life.”

In May 2026, he provided an update on X, revealing that recent PET scans indicated he is now in remission from both types of cancer he battled. However, he also candidly discussed the severe side effects from radiation therapy, which led to a significant weight loss of 45 pounds and an inability to consume solid food for several months.
“What you’re witnessing is the result of the extensive radiation I underwent for the carcinoma in my throat,” Dave explained in the video update. “I have not been able to eat solid food for months. Consequently, I lost 45 pounds, which is evident in my appearance. Additionally, it has impacted my ability to speak, and I understand that some of you have noticed a change in my voice.”
