Unraveling the Mystery Behind Gene Hackman and Betsy’s Untimely Deaths
While initial reports suggested that authorities did not suspect foul play, an investigation by TMZ revealed that a search warrant indicated a Santa Fe detective categorized the deaths of Hackman and Arakawa as “suspicious.” This revelation has sparked further curiosity and concern regarding the circumstances of their passing.
Sheriff Adan Mendoza of Santa Fe County issued a statement confirming the unfortunate discovery of both Gene Hackman and his wife, emphasizing the gravity of the situation. The statement, reported by the Santa Fe New Mexican and covered by The Guardian, stated, “We can confirm that both Gene Hackman and his wife were found deceased Wednesday.” This confirmation prompted widespread media attention and public interest in understanding the details surrounding their deaths.
The Guardian reported that deputies responded to a call at Hackman’s residence located in the Santa Fe Summit gated community known as Old Sunset Trail. However, there remains ambiguity regarding whether law enforcement arrived to conduct a welfare check or to investigate a reported death, which adds layers of complexity to the case.
In Sheriff Mendoza’s initial report, it was revealed that an elderly man and his wife, both deceased, were found in their home. He reassured the public, stating, “I want to assure the community and neighborhood that there’s no immediate danger to anyone. We do not believe foul play was a factor in their deaths; however, the exact cause of death has not been determined at this time.” This statement aimed to calm the community amid the unfolding investigation.
The sheriff further elaborated, expressing that they were in the midst of a preliminary death investigation and awaiting approval for a search warrant to gather more evidence and insights into the tragic event.
However, a search warrant obtained by TMZ unveiled alarming details. A local detective noted in his affidavit that the circumstances surrounding the deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation.” Key observations included an unsecured front door, a healthy dog roaming the property, another healthy dog near Arakawa, and a deceased dog found in a closet, alongside an opened pill bottle with scattered pills nearby. Additionally, Hackman was discovered in a separate room without obvious signs of foul play, further complicating the investigation.
The report indicated that the deputy observed an open prescription pill bottle near Arakawa, whose body exhibited signs of decomposition, including facial “bloating” and “mummification” in her hands and feet. In contrast, Hackman was found fully clothed, leading investigators to suspect he may have fallen, as his sunglasses were located beside him.
Understanding the Causes of Gene Hackman and Betsy’s Deaths
Following the initial news of Hackman’s tragic passing, social media speculation emerged suggesting that carbon monoxide poisoning could have been a potential cause. This speculation gained traction due to the absence of foul play and the unsettling details regarding the couple and their dog being discovered dead. Nonetheless, a detective’s report obtained by TMZ clarified that there were “no obvious signs of a gas leak” in Hackman’s residence.
Over a week after the couple’s deaths, E! News reported the confirmed causes of death for both Hackman and Arakawa. Surveillance footage indicated that Arakawa likely passed away on February 11, 2025, with her death attributed to hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a severe respiratory illness contracted through exposure to rodent excretions.
As for Hackman, medical investigators noted that his pacemaker last registered activity on February 18, suggesting he probably died around that date. The investigator revealed that Hackman was in “a very poor state of health” at the time of his passing, attributing his death to hypertensive and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), or hardening of the arteries, with Alzheimer’s disease identified as a significant contributing factor.
