Elon Musk has a mixed history when it comes to delivering on his promises. According to MuskOmeter, a platform that tracks his commitments, he has fulfilled only about 24 percent of them.
It is somewhat remarkable that one of his more whimsical commitments from this year has actually materialized.
On Friday afternoon, Musk unveiled the first episode of an AI-generated adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey, created using Grok Imagine, the AI video generator developed by his company, xAI. This project is a collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, both known for their expertise in generative AI filmmaking.

Musk initially made this promise back in July. As reported by Mashable at the time, he claimed on X that Grok Imagine would produce a full-length Odyssey movie by year’s end, aiming for it to be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.”
This promise followed a series of Musk’s criticisms regarding Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey. Much of the backlash from the right focused on the film’s historical accuracy. The first trailer raised concerns about the authenticity of the adaptation, with some critics deeming the armor depicted as more Roman than Greek.
The controversy intensified with the casting choices, particularly Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page as Sinon. Musk publicly criticized Nolan on X, suggesting he had “lost his integrity” over these casting decisions, as reported by Mashable. Musk and his supporters argued that a Black actress should not play a character historically described as the epitome of beauty in the ancient world.
This raises questions about societal standards of beauty. It’s important to note that Helen of Troy is a mythical figure, not a historical one. While Troy was a real city, scholars continue to debate the existence of the Trojan War. In Greek mythology, Helen is said to be the daughter of Zeus, born from an egg. The term “historical accuracy” carries a heavy burden in this context.

Musk also expressed discontent over Page’s casting. In May, he reshared critical posts about the casting decisions, some of which misgendered the trans actor. Since Nolan’s casting announcement did not specify roles, conspiracy theories emerged suggesting Page would portray Achilles, while in reality, Page played Sinon, a character who originates from Virgil’s Aeneid, which is often viewed as Roman reinterpretation of the Trojan War.
Musk and conservative influencers predicted that Nolan’s film would fail, coining the phrase “go woke, go broke.” Contrary to these predictions, The Odyssey premiered to an impressive $124.5 million in July, a notable figure for an R-rated, nearly three-hour film. IMAX 70mm screenings sold out weeks prior to release, as previously reported by Mashable. Currently, the film has surpassed $1.7 billion in global box office sales.
Nolan has openly voiced skepticism about the role of generative AI in creative endeavors. Earlier this year, he stated to AFP that the notion of AI replacing human creativity is “nonsense,” according to The Guardian.
What Are the Qualities of Elon Musk’s AI-Generated The Odyssey?
The Grok Imagine adaptation of Homer’s epic is what one might expect from AI-generated content. The inaugural episode lasts just over seven minutes and depicts the Greeks’ arrival at Troy. Notably, every character portrayed is white.
Visually, the adaptation suffers from common issues found in generative AI video, including unnaturally perfect teeth, an unrealistic hair texture that resembles water, and skin that appears smudged due to the model’s inability to accurately capture lighting and perspective. The backgrounds are also plagued by texture pop-in issues, reminiscent of video games that load low-resolution textures before displaying the detailed versions.
As a standalone viewing experience, the writing lacks quality, making it difficult to distinguish among the characters, many of whom look alike or resemble real people too closely.

Throughout the entire seven-minute episode, Odysseus is the only character named, which can be confusing for viewers unfamiliar with the story. For instance, how is one to know that one of the two men in the image above is Palamedes? I certainly did not.
In a promotional post, Wonder Studios claimed on X that “Homer didn’t have Grok… we do.” This statement is valid. Homer’s storytelling ability was so compelling that his tales have been adapted for nearly 3,000 years without the aid of AI.
While Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is nearing the end of its theatrical run, the highly praised film is set to be released digitally on November 17. To tide audiences over, Wolfgang Petersen’s Troy, featuring Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, has undergone a cultural re-evaluation following the success of Nolan’s adaptation. This human-made film currently holds an average rating of 3.5 on Letterboxd.
