S&P Dow Jones Indices, the organization responsible for managing the Dow Jones Industrial Average, has announced that on June 29, Alphabet, Inc., the parent company of Google, will join the index, while Verizon will be removed. This marks a significant shift in the composition of the index.
This alteration is the first since 2024, when Dow (not to be confused with the company) and Intel were dropped to make way for Nvidia and Sherwin-Williams. This change is particularly noteworthy because adding a paint company does not seem like a groundbreaking decision. The goal of this new adjustment is to better represent market dynamism rather than simply list prominent companies. According to CNBC, the index aims to reflect market trends related to artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and advertising.
With just 30 members, the Dow feels like an exclusive club, representing a prestigious endorsement of companies—possibly even more so than the S&P 500, which includes a broader selection of 500 companies.
It’s essential to remember that there are no formal criteria for inclusion in the index, making these changes appear somewhat arbitrary.
The index is weighted by stock price rather than market capitalization, further contributing to its unpredictability. Historically, this means that significant fluctuations in the stock price of Goldman Sachs can dramatically influence the average, primarily due to the high cost of a single share. As of this writing, one share of Goldman Sachs is priced at $1,089.29, whereas a share of Alphabet, Inc. costs approximately $348.17, which has increased about 1.7% in after-hours trading following the Dow announcement.
This change holds more than just symbolic significance. Investors holding common financial products such as the State Street SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF or the leveraged ProShares UltraPro Dow30 will find themselves owning a portion of Google, regardless of their initial investment intentions.
