Mercedes-AMG has solidified its reputation for high-performance vehicles with the introduction of the GT63 SE Performance, a sedan powered by a sophisticated 4.0-liter V8 biturbo hybrid engine. the company has now unveiled its most formidable car to date, veering away from traditional combustion engines. The new GT 4-Door Coupé boasts an astonishing 1,153 horsepower, powered entirely by electricity and featuring an innovative, lightweight powertrain.
In order to rival Porsche’s electric Taycan, Mercedes-AMG developed the 800-volt AMG.EA platform. This cutting-edge architecture incorporates three advanced “axial-flux” motors, which deliver high power while minimizing weight and size. The front motor, measuring just 3.5 inches in thickness, can reach over 15,000 rpm and activates only when extra performance or regenerative braking is needed. Meanwhile, the two rear motors, each approximately 3.2 inches tall, work in conjunction with a single-speed transmission and can achieve just over 13,000 rpm. Remarkably, the entire powertrain weighs only 309 pounds.
Despite their compact size, these motors, when paired with a 106 kWh battery, unleash impressive power outputs. The GT55 variant delivers a maximum of 805 horsepower and 1,328 lb-ft of torque, while the GT63 version produces an extraordinary 1,153 horsepower and 1,475 lb-ft of torque. This astonishing performance propels the GT63 from 0 to 60 mph in a mere 2.0 seconds, outpacing Porsche’s 940 hp Taycan Turbo S by 0.3 seconds. For enthusiasts who crave the sound of a traditional internal combustion engine, the GT models can simulate an AMG V8 sound, complete with gear shift sounds.
The GT 4-Door utilizes a groundbreaking battery developed in collaboration with Mercedes-AMG’s Formula 1 program. It features long cylindrical cells measuring over four inches, enabling a high energy density of 298Wh/kg, along with extended battery life and rapid charging capabilities. The battery is equipped with a non-conductive oil cooling system designed to maintain uniform temperatures across the cells.
Operating at 800 volts and capable of handling up to 800 amps, the GT 4-Door can charge at rates exceeding 600 kW, allowing it to move from 10% to 80% charge in just 11 minutes. Mercedes-AMG has rated the GT55 and GT63 models, which share the same battery capacity, at 370 to 470 miles on Europe’s WLTP cycle, translating to over 300 miles of range according to the EPA.

To support its tremendous power, the GT 4-Door is equipped with multilink suspensions at both the front and rear. The standard air suspension is enhanced by electronic dampers and AMG’s Active Ride Control system. In everyday driving, regenerative braking primarily slows the vehicle, while the 5,400-pound car can be brought to a halt using carbon-ceramic disc brakes at the front and steel rotor discs at the rear during more spirited driving.
The exterior of the GT 4-Door features a sleek aerodynamic design with a drag coefficient of just 0.22. It showcases sculpted fenders, a panoramic glass roof, and elegant strakes along the hood and sides. The vehicle is notably longer than the Taycan, measuring five additional inches. At the front, the running lights are shaped like Mercedes’ iconic three-pointed star, complemented by a large grille primarily for aesthetics that allows airflow for battery cooling, controlled by louvers. The rear taillights, consisting of six distinct lights, also prominently display the Mercedes logo, ensuring brand recognition.

The interior of the GT 4-Door is designed for sportiness and comfort, featuring supportive seats and a prominent central display, alongside a dedicated passenger screen. The battery layout and spacious design ensure ample room for all passengers. Drivers can select from seven distinct drive modes, choose from nine traction control settings, and take advantage of a warm-up feature that indicates when tires and motors reach optimal temperatures. a performance panel provides insights into racetrack statistics.
The 2027 Mercedes-AMG GT55 4-Door Coupe is set to debut later this year, with the more powerful GT63 version expected to launch in 2027. While pricing details remain undisclosed, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S typically exceeds $200,000. Given that the GT63 is anticipated to outperform its counterpart, it is reasonable to expect its price to be in a similar range.
