You’ll find a variety of bizarre shit on the market on eBay, together with, apparently, a used police Harris Stingray that would help you intercept the mobile site visitors of your pals and enemies.
The Stingray is a extensively used regulation enforcement device that permits police to intercept mobile phone alerts and knowledge. Identified technically as an IMSI catcher or a “Cell Web site Simulator,” it basically conducts a Man-in-the-Center assault, emulating the alerts of a mobile phone tower and drawing in unsuspecting cellular site visitors. There are different IMSI catchers in the marketplace, although the Stingray is well probably the most recognizable model.
Stingrays are controversial for a lot of causes, and civil liberties advocates contend they function in a legally grey space that has the potential to violate (or, at the least, undermine) cellular customers’ Fourth Modification rights.
Nicely, now you should purchase one. Perhaps. In case you have $100,000 to spare.
Sure, this machine is promoting for a cool hundred grand—which is some huge cash however is, really, throughout the approximate worth realm of what these gadgets used to promote for (in 2016, Vice Information obtained ahold of gross sales paperwork displaying that new Stingray packages sometimes offered for as excessive as $160,000 to cops).
On this case, the eBay vendor, “buynsave2005,” seems to specialise in arcane and classic {hardware}, with over 10,000 gross sales beneath their belt. That stated, if you wish to lay declare to this unhealthy boy, you additionally must stay with the truth that it might not work. Certainly, the itemizing contains the next disclaimer: “System is UNTESTED – We solely know that it powers on. Contains: Solely objects pictured. We should not have the required tools to check unit. Offered As Is.”
That’s not nice. It appears unlikely that the informal eBay consumer goes to need to spend $100k for an untested, “offered as is” machine that would doubtlessly get them in authorized hassle. The product additionally doesn’t embrace a product information, so that you’ll have to one way or the other determine find out how to use it. In 2016, The Intercept revealed a number of totally different Stingray consumer manuals belonging to the Harris Company, which was the unique vendor of the Stingray (Harris has since merged with L3Technologies, one other protection contractor, to develop into L3Harris). So, should you’re the fortunate winner of this merchandise, you possibly can thank us for the hyperlink.
