Many people share a sense of unease regarding Elon Musk’s growing political affiliations. This sentiment does not stem from his beliefs, but rather from the fact that his political engagements compel anyone discussing topics like electric vehicles, space exploration, or even social media to inadvertently take on the role of a political commentator. This happens simply by commenting on the latest happenings surrounding his ventures.
Today’s events have stirred up yet another wave of conspiracy theories, likely prompting some of Musk’s devoted supporters to respond fervently in my mentions.
As you’ve probably noticed, the platform formerly known as Twitter, now called X, faced significant outages today across various regions. According to Elon Musk, these interruptions were the result of a large-scale cyberattack.
In light of the ongoing outage reports, Musk provided his perspective, stating:
“We experienced a substantial cyberattack directed at X. We face attacks daily, but this particular incident involved a high level of resources. A considerable, coordinated group and/or a nation appears to be involved.”
Later, in a televised segment on Fox Business, Musk attributed the suspected DDoS attack to a group based in Ukraine.
“Although we’re uncertain about the precise details, it’s clear there was a significant cyberattack aimed at disrupting the X system, with IP addresses traced back to the Ukraine region.”
However, this assertion raises eyebrows. It seems somewhat implausible that a group from Ukraine, a country currently engaged in a major territorial conflict, would target Musk’s enterprises as a form of retaliation for his recent remarks regarding the conflict.
While it’s not impossible, other intelligence reports indicate that a known hacking group from Russia was likely responsible for the attack on X earlier today.
On Telegram, a group known as “Dark Storm” claimed responsibility for the DDoS attack. Cybersecurity experts have linked Dark Storm to pro-Palestinian activities and Russian affiliations, and they appear to offer DDoS attacks as a service. Notably, code mentions related to the X attack have also been associated with this group.DDoS attacks as a service, have also reportedly been found in code mentions relating to the X attack.
Additionally, due to recent cost-cutting measures, X has lowered its security protocols, making it more vulnerable to such attacks. It seems far more plausible that Dark Storm executed a large-scale DDoS assault on X. The question of who orchestrated this attack remains, but it seems doubtful that Musk would rush to blame Ukraine without thorough investigation.
Moreover, Musk is currently advocating for Ukraine to conduct elections, despite the ongoing conflict, aiming to replace its current leadership to facilitate peace negotiations with Russia. While the idea of peace is commendable, this approach could inadvertently enable Russia to gain ground in Ukraine, with the U.S. seemingly endorsing this outcome.
Establishing such a precedent could lead to dangerous consequences.
While I prefer to steer clear of intricate political discussions, it’s evident that Elon Musk’s personal political ambitions are increasingly intersecting with his business operations, which could profoundly affect all of his ventures.
At present, Tesla’s sales are experiencing a significant downturn, accompanied by various protests against Musk and his companies around the globe. Meanwhile, SpaceX continues its efforts to develop a reliable rocket for missions to Mars, following its latest launch failure, and X is now facing repeated large-scale DDoS attacks.
These protests seem to be more directed at Musk’s political views rather than the companies themselves. However, with Tesla’s stock prices falling and Musk’s other businesses encountering similar challenges, it will be intriguing to see how long he can remain in the political spotlight while managing these enterprises.
It appears that Musk’s businesses are poised for significant repercussions. For instance, Starlink has become an essential resource in numerous areas, but Musk’s recent comments suggesting he could disable Starlink access at will have certainly prompted various governments to explore alternative options.
Furthermore, this may just be the beginning of a series of attacks against X.
The platform has struggled to expand its user base since Musk’s takeover, and continued outages could ultimately jeopardize its standing as a reliable source for real-time news.
It’s also plausible that this was an isolated incident, and perhaps the attack did indeed stem from Ukrainian hackers, as Musk claims. Nevertheless, I suspect this is part of a broader backlash against Musk that is unlikely to improve in the near future.
While he is well within his rights to defend against such attacks on his businesses, it is ultimately his companies and their performance that will bear the consequences.
