The latest update in iOS 26 has unveiled an innovative feature designed to enhance the functionality of CarPlay by optimizing the layout to better suit the diverse shapes of vehicle displays. Announced during the WWDC 2025, this exciting addition is known as Smart Display Zoom. When this feature is activated, it intelligently reduces the size of various elements on the screen, allowing an additional row of app icons to be displayed, thereby improving user accessibility and interaction.

As highlighted by CarPlay engineer Olivia Hess in a developer video shared by MacRumors, “Vehicle screens come in many shapes and sizes.” Hess elaborated that in iOS 26, certain screen configurations empower users to adjust their display scale through Smart Display Zoom. This feature can be easily configured within the Settings menu in CarPlay. Once enabled, your CarPlay app will automatically adapt its size to align with the new display scale, enhancing usability and aesthetics.

While this adjustment might seem minor, it significantly enhances the user experience for those utilizing numerous applications on CarPlay. Currently, the Smart Display Zoom feature is accessible only in a developer beta version. However, it is expected to roll out in a public beta next month, with the final iteration of iOS 26 anticipated for release by September this year, making it available for all users.

In addition to Smart Display Zoom, CarPlay is set to receive several other noteworthy enhancements as part of the iOS 26 update. These improvements include a more compact interface for incoming calls, which ensures that essential navigation directions remain visible without obstruction. Additionally, users can look forward to new features in Messages within CarPlay, such as Tapbacks—which are emoji responses—and the capability to pin conversations for quick access. Furthermore, widgets and Live Activities will also be seamlessly integrated into the vehicle’s infotainment system. These exciting updates will also be available in the upcoming CarPlay Ultra version.
