Hayden Panettiere shares a troubling experience from her teenage years in her recent memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, published on May 19. The 36-year-old actress, known for her role in Scream VI, recounts a time when she was aboard a luxurious yacht surrounded by celebrities. During this encounter, a friend urged her to “get in bed” with a well-known older man, raising questions among fans about his identity.
“My body no longer felt like my own,” Hayden reflected, illustrating her discomfort in one passage. The memoir explores her battles with addiction, the pressures of fame, and her interpersonal relationships. She vividly describes her reaction at the moment: “‘Oh my God,’ I thought. ‘Is he naked under there?’” This troubling situation escalated when her friend suggested, “I want you to get in bed with him,” and then exited the room.
In her account, Hayden only described the man as a “famous thirty-something British singer-songwriter.” Despite her initial hesitation, she complied with her friend’s request by entering the bed.
“As soon as the door clicked closed, my survival instinct kicked in,” the Heroes star recounted, revealing her immediate response to the unnamed man: “Look … I don’t know what she said to you, but this is not going to happen.”
After leaving the room, Hayden felt compelled to gather her belongings and leave the yacht altogether.
“I felt like I’d been kicked in the face,” she expressed, reflecting on the sense of betrayal she experienced from her friend. “She’d confided in me, pampered me, and treated me like her best friend — then turned around and treated me like a call girl.”
Hayden’s memoir was released just a week after her appearance on Jay Shetty’s “On Purpose” podcast, where she discussed the book and the yacht incident in detail.
“The fact that I was 18, even though I’d lived such a significant life and thought I was so mature at that age … scientifically, your frontal lobes don’t develop until we’re what, 25, 26?” Hayden explained during the May 11 episode. “So, even though I felt capable of making healthy choices, I wasn’t fully aware of my surroundings.”
She remarked that the request from her friend “took [her] by surprise.”
