Alycia Baumgardner and Event Host Respond to the Altercation
On Monday, May 18, Alycia Baumgardner issued an official statement regarding Claressa Shields’ slap. She described the incident as “unprovoked and entirely consistent with the individual involved.” Alycia further claimed that she was “physically assaulted without provocation,” alleging that Claressa has a history of such behavior, including mocking “other fighters’ brain injuries and initiating one-sided altercations,” as well as displaying aggression toward other female athletes.
“Such conduct is unacceptable and should not be tolerated in any professional sport. This behavior exemplifies a repeated pattern of hostility, chaos, and attention-seeking actions that embarrass women’s sports. This issue is being addressed legally and professionally,” Alycia stated.
In conjunction with Alycia’s statement, MVP announced Claressa Shields’ ban from all future events, commending Alycia for her composed response to the slap during their event.
“MVP has a strict zero-tolerance policy for hostile, threatening, or aggressive behavior towards fighters, staff, media, or guests at any of our events. Physical altercations outside of the ring or cage are unacceptable in any MVP environment. MVP does not condone or accept Claressa Shields’ actions, which reflect poorly on both our organization and women’s sports—an area we have tirelessly worked to uplift. Effective immediately, Claressa Shields is banned from all MVP events until further notice. There is a proper time and place for fighter tensions and banter, but physically attacking another athlete while present as a guest in a private VIP area is unacceptable. We appreciate the swift response of venue security in managing and de-escalating the situation, and we commend Alycia Baumgardner for not retaliating and further escalating the conflict.”

By Tuesday, Claressa’s tone shifted slightly as she engaged her legal team to navigate her public statements. Her updated message followed MVP’s announcement regarding her ban and Alycia’s intention to pursue legal action. In a tweet, Claressa asserted that online clips do not convey the complete narrative and pointed to Alycia’s alleged “history of attacks and threats.” Claressa framed her slap as a form of self-defense.
“I have dedicated my life to the sport of boxing. Through the grace of God, I have been blessed. My talent has undeniably elevated women’s boxing to new heights. This extends beyond the ring. What has circulated online does not provide the full context. Until now, I have never condoned violence, but I will not remain silent while facing continuous verbal assaults, threats, discrimination, or character assassination. I refuse to let disrespect shape the narrative surrounding me or be twisted into talking points about colorism or envy. There is a documented history of attacks and threats from this individual that led to this moment, and that history will speak for itself. I differentiate between aggression and protection. I stand firm in my integrity and what I have achieved. I carry my champion status with pride, in both title and in my conduct, what I protect, and what I refuse to tolerate. I have fought too hard and come too far to allow anyone to rewrite my story or define my character. Any further false allegations or defamation of character will be addressed by my legal team.”
