After some time exploring the offerings from DSTLRY, a fresh publisher focusing on creator-owned comics, I finally delved into the gripping series Warm Fusion, and I must say, the experience has been nothing short of thrilling. This series has captured my attention right from the start, and it’s clear that it is crafted with a unique vision and a deep understanding of the genre.
Warm Fusion is masterfully described as “a dark, sci-fi thriller, blending the unsettling body horror reminiscent of David Cronenberg with the desolate urban atmosphere of Blade Runner.” The narrative unfolds in a dystopian future version of New York City, perpetually shrouded in rain and plagued by birth defects stemming from a catastrophic medical incident orchestrated by a greedy pharmaceutical company. The plot follows detective Jarrod Hannover and escort Vin Young (nicknamed Snow White) as they investigate a disturbing series of brutal murders that target vulnerable brothel workers. In parallel, we’re introduced to the enigmatic Nicholas Fleischer, a scientist involved in developing an experimental treatment known as Warm Fusion, which astonishingly promotes the growth of new limbs where they were previously missing.
This series delivers an impressive array of elements, from its striking cyberpunk aesthetic to a compelling script that hooks you right from the first page. The initial two issues are packed with intense scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat, and the pacing is deftly crafted to maintain an appropriate balance between building suspense and revealing crucial plot details. Additionally, the character of Vin is captivating; she exudes a coolness that is hard to resist. The second issue was released this week, with the next installment set to arrive in mid-April. Warm Fusion is brought to life by the talented writer Scott Hoffman and artist Alberto Ponticelli, with vibrant colors provided by Lee Loughridge and masterful lettering by Steve Wands.
