Fans of the BioShock franchise will have to endure a lengthy wait to discover whether the next installment will transport players back to the iconic cities of Rapture or Columbia, or perhaps introduce an entirely new location. Recent reports from Bloomberg indicate that the upcoming BioShock game, currently being crafted by Cloud Chamber, has encountered significant hurdles, failing to meet the expectations of executives at 2K Games. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, the leadership expressed a desire for enhancements in the game’s narrative, which is slated for a substantial overhaul in the months ahead.
In a statement to Bloomberg, 2K Games acknowledged that while the game is currently “good,” their commitment is to deliver an exceptional experience. As the fourth chapter in the critically acclaimed BioShock series, this installment carries the weight of following the monumental success of BioShock Infinite, which debuted in 2013 and garnered numerous accolades for its innovative design, captivating gameplay, compelling story, and original soundtrack. This latest development setback coincides with significant shifts in the leadership structure at the studio, with Cloud Chamber‘s studio head, Kelley Gilmore, stepping down and the creative director, Hogarth de la Plante, transitioning to a publishing role.
While the title remains unconfirmed, this anticipated project, often referred to as BioShock 4, was first unveiled in 2019 alongside the establishment of Cloud Chamber. Despite the excitement surrounding its announcement, fans are still left waiting six years later, with concerns mounting over potential layoffs at the studio. The latest report from Bloomberg highlighted a recent meeting where developers were informed that the company must “become more agile and efficient” to navigate its current challenges.
The fourth BioShock game is not the only title in the franchise facing difficulties in development. According to Bloomberg, the much-anticipated remake of the original BioShock was reportedly shelved by 2K Games earlier this year. The groundbreaking game that introduced players to the fascinating yet haunting world of Rapture was originally released in 2007 and later remastered in 2016 as part of BioShock: The Collection. This remaster was designed to support 1080p resolution and enhanced frame rates, but fans continue to yearn for a full remake that captures the dystopian essence of the underwater city with modern graphics and technology.
