YouTube has officially launched its Ask YouTube, an AI-driven assistant, for desktop users in the U.S.
Initially introduced in the mobile app in 2023, Ask YouTube empowers users to ask conversational questions, enhancing their content discovery experience.
YouTube explains, “Ask YouTube is a new, conversational search experience designed to help you explore complex questions and dive deeper into topics you’re curious about. As a complement to standard Search, Ask YouTube responses blend relevant clips, videos, and Shorts with helpful text, guiding you quickly to the most useful videos to answer your prompts.”
YouTube encourages users to utilize the tool by asking more elaborate, multi-layered questions rather than sticking to simple search terms.
Examples provided by the company include:
- Planning a trip: “Can you help me plan a 3-day road trip from San Francisco to Santa Barbara on a budget?”
- Learning a skill: “What are step-by-step instructions on how to teach a kid to ride a bike?”
- Comparing products: “Compare the best noise-canceling headphones for traveling.”
- Decoding content: “What is the meaning behind this song’s lyrics?”
Users can ask follow-up questions under Ask a follow-up to delve deeper into subjects of interest.
Ask YouTube will function as an optional feature, while YouTube’s traditional search bar will continue to be available for users.
AI-powered discovery tools have become commonplace across various platforms, and Ask YouTube aligns with this trend towards more interactive and conversational discovery methods.
The rollout of YouTube’s desktop version has taken some time. The Ask YouTube feature was integrated into the CTV version of the app back in February, making its delayed arrival on the official YouTube website somewhat surprising.
Now, this feature is accessible to all signed-in users in the U.S. aged 13 and older.
To start using Ask YouTube, simply click the Ask YouTube button in the search bar and type your question using natural, conversational language,” YouTube advises.
This addition could significantly enhance the YouTube discovery process, offering users a better way to engage with topics of interest within the platform.
