Andor Theorists Are Still Being Gently Disappointed by Tony Gilroy

Key Insights

  • Intent: Tony Gilroy emphasizes that fan interpretations of the finale are interesting but not his intended message.
  • Scene Analysis: The moment with Bix walking in the field does not imply she knows about Cassian’s fate.
  • Creator’s Voice: Gilroy acknowledges various fan theories while reinforcing his original vision for the story.
  • Complexity: Andor allows for diverse interpretations, yet Gilroy’s authorial intent remains central.

Tony Gilroy is no stranger to shutting down a fan theory or two when it comes to his vision for what Andor set out to achieve. But as we get into the season of looking back at the greatest hits of 2025 (and with Andor season 2 certainly among them), the showrunner is being brought back into the trenches of Star Wars theorycraft just so he can go, “Well, that’s nice, but no.”

Reflecting on the reception of season 2 with GamesRadar, Gilroy was recently confronted with the fan theory that Andor season 2’s final moments—which see Bix walking through a field of crops on the planet Mina-Rau, cradling her and Cassian’s child—depict Bix somehow sensing, through the Force or otherwise, that Cassian had perished on the beaches of Scarif during the events of Rogue One.

It’s certainly an idea, and leans into season 2’s brief dalliances with the Force, after Bix took Cassian to a Force healer based out of the Rebel enclave on Yavin and she intuited his importance to upcoming events. But, according to Gilroy, while it’s nice, that’s just simply not what he was trying to convey out of the scene.

“You have to be careful about this, because you don’t want to rob somebody else’s experience. It wasn’t my intention,” Gilroy plainly told GamesRadar. “I don’t know how information would travel. I would imagine, at some point, she would find out what had happened. I don’t know how she would intuit that he had passed away. Maybe she’s feeling something. Maybe that’s a ritual, that she goes out there every night and says something to him. I’m not sure, but it wasn’t my intention that she knew.”

It’s not the first time Gilroy has had to diplomatically acknowledge fandom while also reiterating his own intent—remember the whole foofaraw around Jyn/Cassian shippers and Cassian/Bix shippers?—but it’s an important reminder that, while the reward of a show like Andor is that it has the depth to be open to multiple angles of critique and interpretation, there is still also an authorial voice that its creator is not going to deny exists alongside those interpretations. None is more valid than the other, but they all just happen to coexist from certain points of view.
