YouTube is set to implement machine learning technology to accurately assess whether users should be classified under a teen account. The platform has announced that it will begin testing this innovative AI application with a select group of US users in the upcoming weeks, as part of a trial phase before expanding it to a broader audience. This sophisticated tool will analyze various user behaviors, including the types of videos being searched, the categories of content viewed, and the duration of the account’s existence. Once an account is identified through machine learning as belonging to a teenager, YouTube will take important measures such as disabling personalized advertising, activating digital wellbeing tools, and implementing additional safeguards to protect its younger audience.
Since the launch of its teen account features in 2021, YouTube has consistently expanded its offerings aimed at younger users. The company has reported that this machine learning strategy has been successfully employed in various other markets for some time, yielding positive results. This proactive approach underscores YouTube’s commitment to creating a safer online environment for its users, particularly those who are still developing their digital literacy.
YouTube is not alone in utilizing AI tools to identify users who may be misrepresenting their age. The platform has acknowledged that it places the responsibility of correcting any inaccuracies, or false positives, on its users. If the system incorrectly categorizes someone as under the age of 18, users will be presented with the option to confirm their age by providing verification, such as a credit card or a government-issued ID. In contrast, Meta has also developed similar capabilities, which it began rolling out across Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger earlier this year, allowing users to simply adjust their settings if the AI incorrectly estimates their age.
