Renowned filmmaker Paul Schrader, celebrated for penning iconic American films such as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull, has delved into the exploration of the darker aspects of masculinity through alienation and ego in collaboration with director Martin Scorsese. in recent years, Schrader’s work has drawn criticism, appearing to lean more towards impulsive decisions rather than insightful commentary, particularly with his controversial engagement with artificial intelligence.
With the upcoming release of his film The Basics of Philosophy, Schrader is actively participating in promotional activities and sharing his viewpoints. In a recent interview with The Playlist, he revealed plans for a future project that will utilize AI-generated actors. This choice is contentious, and Schrader’s rationale for opting for AI over traditional actors raises concerns about the artistic integrity of the film.
Discussing his film Three Guns At Dawn, Schrader shared, “I had originally written it about three Black brothers, all of whom are bad guys: a corrupt cop, a drug dealer, and a sexual criminal… We sent it out to actors, and no Black actors wanted to play in a movie where there are no good Black people.”
This assertion raises eyebrows. It’s hard to believe that no actors would be willing to consider a role in a film scripted by Schrader and reportedly produced by Antoine Fuqua, especially when other productions find actors for less nuanced roles. Nonetheless, let’s entertain Schrader’s claim.
Schrader indicated that this obstacle nearly doomed the project. “But then AI came along, and I didn’t need Black actors,” he admitted to The Playlist. This perspective is troubling.
He explained that the film will be entirely AI-generated. For those following Schrader’s recent trajectory, this decision aligns with his newfound enthusiasm for AI technology. He even remarked, “AI is smarter than I am” after requesting ChatGPT to generate a film concept in his style, which he found surprisingly reflective of his own voice—perhaps revealing more about his creative process than he intended.
Recently, Schrader faced accusations of sexual harassment from an assistant and had previously engaged in a brief AI-driven romantic experiment, which he pursued to better understand male and female interactions. That relationship ended abruptly when the AI partner “dumped” him.
Sadly, it appears that Schrader is not heeding the signs to disengage from AI. Instead, he seems to be doubling down on this approach. He may soon need to rely on AI to purchase theater tickets, as it remains uncertain how much of an audience is left for the artistic direction he is pursuing.
