The evolution of semantic search capabilities has rendered hashtags largely unnecessary for content discovery. Recently, X’s owner, Elon Musk, directly advised users to refrain from using hashtags in their posts, echoing the sentiment that traditional hashtag use is outdated.
Musk emphasized that the platform “doesn’t need them anymore,” underscoring the reduced value that hashtags now hold in engaging audiences and expanding reach.
Despite this, one might wonder if hashtags could still enhance engagement and broaden audience reach.
The answer likely leans towards “probably not.”
According to Instagram’s head, Adam Mosseri, hashtags might help align your posts with specific communities, which could offer some discovery advantages. However, he noted that the overall reach gained from hashtags is minimal. Similarly, LinkedIn expert Richard van der Blom has found that hashtags no longer significantly boost post visibility on that platform either.
While hashtags may still play a role in fostering community and connection, their ability to increase visibility and reach seems to have dwindled considerably.
Through hashtag discovery, there’s potential to form new groups and followings, even if they don’t relate to current trends. Many users continue to incorporate tags out of habit, reflecting a longstanding behavior.

Indeed, Instagram has even eliminated the option to follow hashtags, indicating a shift in focus. Meanwhile, the Threads team continues to recommend users add topic tags to their posts, creating some confusion around the best practices for hashtag usage.
While there are mixed messages about the relevance of hashtags, the consensus remains that they are not as effective as they once were for systematic discovery. Advanced algorithms are now much more adept at identifying topical relevance and resonance from the broader context of a post.
