The gaming industry is facing a significant crisis, characterized by a massive loss of talent and the cancellation of multiple projects, as evidenced by the latest developments from EA. On Tuesday, the company announced it would be implementing “targeted team adjustments,” a euphemism for substantial layoffs, with reports from Bloomberg estimating that between 300 and 400 employees will be affected. This includes around 100 positions eliminated at Respawn, alongside the disappointing news of an unannounced Titanfall game being scrapped yet again.
The canceled Titanfall project, internally referred to as R7, was rumored to be an extraction shooter that combined elements of the beloved mech and parkour franchise. According to Bloomberg, the game was still in the early stages of development and was far from being ready for release. The announcement from Respawn regarding the cancellation of two “early-stage incubation projects” further supports this, highlighting the challenging landscape for new game development. Although details about the second canceled project remain scarce, it was reportedly discarded earlier this year, indicating ongoing struggles within the studio.
In a strategic pivot, Respawn has decided to concentrate its efforts on the more established franchises of Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi, where EA seems to have a clearer path to profitability. Earlier this month, the company also teased another exciting title set in the Star Wars universe: a tactical game reminiscent of XCOM, titled Star Wars Zero Company. This shift in focus illustrates how Respawn is attempting to navigate the volatile gaming market by investing in projects with a higher chance of success.
Following an extensive workforce reduction that saw approximately 1,130 jobs cut in 2023, EA has continued this trend into 2024, laying off about five percent of its total workforce. These decisions are undoubtedly difficult for everyone involved, and Respawn expressed its gratitude toward the affected employees, emphasizing that their creativity and contributions have been instrumental in shaping Respawn into the studio it is today.
