The open earbuds market is rapidly evolving, and a new budget-friendly contender has just emerged in 2026.
Introducing the Baseus Bowie MC2 earbuds, officially launched on June 1. Retailing at $79.99, they stand out as one of the most cost-effective open models available. (Continue reading to discover their promotional launch price.)
Despite their budget-friendly price, Baseus aims to deliver impressive sound quality, innovative comfort features, and an extended battery life that outlasts many earbuds priced over three times that of the MC2s. So, how do they perform? While a comprehensive review is pending, I’ve spent a few days testing these latest open earbuds, and I have some initial insights to share.

Open earbuds appeal to many users due to the awareness they provide while engaging with the environment. This awareness often surpasses any transparency mode offered by traditional earbuds. Users can enjoy music in a park or jog through the city without feeling completely disconnected from their surroundings.
With this perspective, the Bowie MC2 earbuds present a compelling initial offering on several important aspects.
Mashable Light Speed
Exceptional Battery Performance
For those who wish to listen to music while remaining aware of their surroundings, a long battery life is crucial. Baseus meets this need with an impressive 13 hours of usage per charge, or 11.5 hours with Bass Boost enabled. In my experience, Bass Boost significantly enhances sound quality, making it valuable even for those who typically do not prefer bass-heavy audio. Without it, music may feel somewhat distant.
For context, the only other open earbuds I’ve found with similar battery longevity are the Shokz OpenFit Pro, which provide 12 hours of playback per charge and 50 hours with the case. they retail for $250.
Comfort Through Interchangeable Ear Covers
Typically, budget earbuds lack innovative features, but the Bowie MC2 introduces a unique aspect I’ve yet to see in open earbuds: interchangeable ear covers, termed CloudComfort 2.0 cushions by Baseus.
The silicone covers are indeed comfortable, although the sizing options are somewhat limited. The earbuds come with medium-sized cushions pre-installed, and large and extra-large options are included in the package. Initially, I tried the large covers because the default medium size felt slightly loose compared to other cuff-style earbuds I’ve tested. I found the larger covers didn’t provide a snugger fit.
This might be due to the size of the ear wrap, which seems larger than those found on other earbuds. This design choice likely aims to enhance comfort, but I’ve usually experienced smaller bands as being adequately secure. I will be assessing how this looser fit performs during physical activities, as the IP67 rating suggests these earbuds could effectively serve as workout companions.
Competitive Landscape for Budget Earbuds
At $79.99 (and just $50 during the promotion), these earbuds could offer remarkable value, especially considering that many popular open earbuds from leading audio brands cost $200 or more.
The primary competition appears to be the EarFun Clip earbuds, priced at $69.99 when not on sale and often available for under $50. Similar to the Baseus earbuds, they support LDAC, feature Bluetooth 6.0, and trail slightly behind in battery life with 10 hours of use per charge and 40 hours with the case.
