Rani Returning Wouldn’t Bother Anita Dobson in ‘Doctor Who’

Key Insights

  • Character Evolution: Mrs. Flood transitioned from a minor role to a significant antagonist in Doctor Who.
  • Future Appearances: The character of Mrs. Flood, revealed to be the Rani, could potentially return in future episodes.
  • Behind the Scenes: Actress Anita Dobson was surprised by her character’s true identity during filming.
  • Mixed Reception: While intriguing, Mrs. Flood’s character was less compelling compared to the other Rani.

When Mrs. Flood first appeared in Doctor Who as Ruby Sunday’s quirky neighbor, she seemed to have a small role, only slightly more than a cameo. However, there was something about this elderly lady that captured viewers’ attention, especially since her debut in “The Church on Ruby Road” included a fourth-wall break showcasing her TARDIS knowledge.

By the end of Ncuti Gatwa’s run as the Fifteenth Doctor, Mrs. Flood had not only made multiple appearances, but she was also revealed to be a major Doctor Who antagonist in disguise: the Rani. The Mrs. Flood version of the Rani eventually bi-generated, introducing a more stylish and assertive portrayal of the Rani (played by Archie Panjabi) in the climactic face-off with the Doctor and his friends.

Fans will remember that “The Reality War” featured the Panjabi Rani being devoured by Omega, the first Time Lord transformed into a monstrous form. As for the Mrs. Flood Rani, who became subservient to the younger Rani she had just created? She seized the moment and simply escaped. In essence, the surviving Time Lady could return to create more chaos in the future.

In an interview with the Radio Times, Dobson mentioned that even she was unaware of Mrs. Flood’s true identity when she first joined Doctor Who.

“During the first series, I was oblivious and simply enjoyed all the little character nuances and mannerisms that [showrunner and writer] Russell [T Davies] was giving me. Then, when he invited me back for another series, my curiosity grew about who she was… But I didn’t find out until I read the last few scripts of that series, and I was completely shocked.”

Of course, Dobson can’t comment on what might happen when the show returns for Christmas 2026, with Davies still at the helm, albeit this time without Disney’s involvement.

However, she is open to the idea of returning: “Anything is possible. If Russell asked me now, I’d be out that door so quickly,” she shared with the Radio Times.

Fans remain uncertain about the future of Doctor Who, including Billie Piper’s potential role or who will embody the Doctor moving forward. Dobson appears to be a delightful person; many enjoyed how Doctor Who included a humorous reference to her real-life marriage to musician Brian May.

Unfortunately, Mrs. Flood was not the most exciting character. Among the two Ranis, she was the far less thrilling version. Perhaps it would be best to leave her in the past alongside the disappointing events of “The Reality War” and move on to new villains instead?
