Threads has achieved a remarkable milestone, boasting an impressive 300 million monthly active users as Meta’s innovative alternative to Twitter continues to gain traction.
According to Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, this text-centric application, which aims to attract users transitioning from X, has welcomed over 200 million new users this year alone, reflecting a significant surge in its growth trajectory.
This growth chart highlights the impressive user acquisition of Threads, demonstrating that as it builds a critical mass of users, it becomes increasingly attractive to new participants eager to join the expanding conversations taking place on the platform.
For additional context, it took Threads a substantial 10 months to grow from 100 million users to 200 million, yet it has now achieved the 300 million mark in less than half that time, showcasing its accelerating popularity.
The phenomenon of social media growth often follows a compounding effect: as more users contribute content, it incentivizes additional sign-ups, enhancing the overall engagement within the community. While this momentum typically stabilizes as platforms reach their peak potential, the current growth figures suggest that Threads is far from leveling off.
At its current rate of user acquisition, Threads has the potential to rival X, which currently has approximately 570 million monthly active users, positioning Threads just over halfway to this benchmark.
Given these trends, it seems plausible that Threads could surpass 500 million monthly active users early in the new year. While sustaining the addition of 100 million users every few months may be ambitious, the current trajectory indicates it remains within the realm of possibility.
Moreover, the latest download rankings reveal that Threads continues to dominate the iOS app charts, indicating a sustained and increasing public interest in the platform.

In Mosseri’s recent announcement, Threads has also disclosed its daily active user count, which stands at 100 million. For comparison, X maintains a daily active user count of 250 million, a number that has remained static since November 2022, showcasing Threads’ potential for growth.
Interestingly, the ratio of daily to monthly active users appears to be lower on Threads (33%) compared to X (44%), suggesting that while the platform is attracting users, it may not yet be fully engaging them on a daily basis.
This discrepancy raises questions about user engagement; the Threads team is currently conducting surveys to gather feedback on its algorithms and content policies, aiming to enhance user experience and retention.
Evaluating Threads alongside X reveals some challenges, particularly regarding the timeliness of content and the mechanisms that drive engagement. For instance, X has proven to be a more effective platform for real-time news updates, like those surrounding the U.S. elections, while Threads’ cautious approach to political content may limit its appeal in such instances.
If Threads can successfully navigate these challenges and adapt to audience preferences, there is a strong possibility for it to accelerate its growth. However, it must also contend with the approximately 25 million users it may have lost to Bluesky during this period of transition.
Had Bluesky not gained popularity following the election, Threads might have reached the 300 million active user milestone even sooner. Nevertheless, the disparity between monthly and daily active users indicates that there are still areas for improvement regarding user retention and overall engagement.
Yet, Threads is certainly tapping into a significant demand among users. Many former Twitter users have migrated to Threads as their new platform of choice, even if it does not perfectly mirror the Twitter experience. It is anticipated that Threads will evolve to resemble Twitter more closely in the coming months.
With the Threads team consistently rolling out updates—such as recent enhancements to link previews and the introduction of new reaction icons to indicate creator engagement—there is substantial potential for further growth and user satisfaction.
While some users express excitement about Bluesky, there is a prevailing concern about Meta’s continued dominance in the social media landscape. However, I believe that Threads has the potential to surpass X in terms of user engagement and active participation before June of next year.
