India Arie Backs Fan’s Critique of Yung Miami’s ‘Spend Dat’

Yung Miami released ‘Spend Dat’ in April, a track that celebrates spending money and scamming (This for all my scammers︱and my get-money b*tches). The song achieved a spot at No. 25 on the Billboard Top 100 and has been hailed as a summer hit, though not without dissent.

One user on Instagram expressed concern, stating the song degrades cultural values, and India Arie appeared to resonate with this sentiment. @mrs.mj.tedla commented, “I’m calling for a boycott of Yung Miami’s song Spend Dat. I believe it’s degrading to our culture. At some point, we have to take seriously the influence music has over our perceptions and the values it reinforces. This cannot represent the song of the Summer.”

The Grammy Award-winning artist responded, urging listeners to make “wise choices.”

“I spent my entire adult life caring way too much,” she remarked. “Because I finally learned that not everyone Cares (with a capital C) and explaining it to them won’t change that. Everything you listen to, see, or consume will influence you. So make wise choices, y’all. The mass acceptance of this song is a CRYSTAL CLEAR indication of a larger issue.”

In a subsequent post on Threads, India emphasized:

“I’ve come to realize that not everyone desires freedom, and it was a VERY rude awakening. I finally understood that not EVERYONE wants to be free. And it was a very, very, very rude awakening. smh. The widespread acceptance of this song reflects a much larger truth.”

India Arie Clarifies Her Position on the Summer Anthem

In response to the viral discussions surrounding her comments, India Arie took to her Instagram Stories to clarify that she was not calling for a boycott of the song.

“FOR CLARITY!! I did not suggest that anyone should boycott this song. I mentioned that its widespread acceptance is a reflection of where we are as a culture. And… THAT’S FACTS,” she stated. “I THINK people should do whatever they WANT TO DO. You do what you want, and I’ll do what I want. And that’s it. MEANWHILE, I also pointed out that our embrace of these songs speaks volumes about our cultural state, which … IS JUST FACTS.”

She also addressed a fan who referenced her generation and brought up Salt-N-Pepa and Lil’ Kim, delivering a sharp response.

“You’re the one person I’m responding to today. I’ve been vocal about this since my first television appearance in 2001 with Bill Maher (what year were you born, by the way?). A DE ROOM. I never claimed that raunchy songs shouldn’t exist; I believe they often appear in the wrong context. But I have reiterated this MANY, MANY, MANY TIMES, and in many ways. Just so you know……”

India Arie’s Insights Ignite a Widespread Online Discussion

The reactions to India Arie’s remarks varied, with many supporting her perspective, while others felt that calling for a boycott was excessive.

User @_.nicoleb._ remarked, This song is where we draw the line?? Not the countless songs about violence and drugs? lol, okay….”

@sequoia_lasha supported Arie’s viewpoint. But my girl @indiaarie is not wrong. It’s disheartening to see children who can barely speak singing this song with such clarity.”

@aflava added, She’s absolutely right. It’s catchy, but the message is detrimental for our youth! 😮.”

@_prophet313 commented, We knowwwww we just can’t help it 🤷🏾‍♂️😂😂.”

@kizzie_lafox remarked, You all take things too seriously; it’s just a song, sista soldier!”

@theofficialljojo responded, Anywaysss….spend dat shii!”
