YouTube is poised to become a more challenging platform for newcomers seeking to monetize their content. The platform recently revealed significant changes to its YouTube Partner Program, which may not bode well for aspiring creators. As of February 1, those looking to join the partner program must achieve notable milestones: a minimum of 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 valid watch hours within the past year or 20 million valid views on Shorts in the last 90 days.
This marks a considerable increase from the existing criteria. Currently, prospective partners are required to have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the previous year or 10 million views on Shorts within the past 90 days. in just a few months, most metrics will double, except for the subscriber requirements.
Creators focusing on Shorts will need to achieve a staggering 10 million views every 90 days to qualify for earnings from the revenue pool. While not meeting this threshold won’t result in immediate removal from the program, it will suspend their earnings for that 90-day period.
Existing partners will encounter new stipulations as well. They must uphold either 1,000 watch hours annually or reach 1 million views on Shorts. creators can circumvent these conditions by increasing their content output. For instance, posting two long-form videos or five Shorts within a 90-day window will keep them compliant with the program’s standards. YouTube will remove creators who fail to upload any content for six months or more.
YouTube assures users that these adjustments will lead to improved outcomes by expanding the Premium Lite subscription across “all countries where we offer YouTube Premium.” This streamlined version of the platform allows users to watch videos without ads, excluding the music streaming feature. The company claims that “with these additional subscribers, creators can expect higher earnings.” Creators will also gain access to a more lucrative revenue pool generated from views by Premium Lite subscribers.
Nevertheless, the actual impact of the Premium Lite tier on subscriber growth remains unclear. YouTube does not publicly disclose subscriber numbers for each specific tier but has reported a total of 125 million paid users across both tiers globally. YouTube attracts nearly 2.7 billion users monthly without any subscription constraints.
Recently, the platform has been implementing substantial changes to compete more effectively against streaming giants like Netflix and HBO Max. YouTube has secured exclusive broadcasting rights for shows featuring notable figures such as Trevor Noah. It has also introduced the ability for creators to organize their content into “seasons.”
