That’s right, the much-anticipated Wicked merchandise drop Wednesdays are back for all of us devoted fans of Oz, providing us with intriguing hints regarding Dorothy Gale’s appearance in Jon M. Chu’s upcoming fall sequel to Wicked. This sequel will seamlessly weave in the beloved Wizard of Oz storyline that fans have eagerly awaited.
Be warned, as there are spoilers ahead! Significant plot developments are unavoidable when showcasing the latest looks of the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the new outfits for Elphaba (played by Cynthia Erivo) as the Wicked Witch of the West, alongside Glinda (portrayed by Ariana Grande) as the Good Witch of Oz.
Let’s delve into the details about Dorothy’s shoes; they are certainly no longer in the possession of Nessarose Thropp. This leads us to speculate that the de facto mayor of Munchkinland, who ultimately becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the East, has met an unfortunate fate, presumably being crushed by a Kansas shack. The new Mattel doll representing Dorothy beautifully captures the nostalgic blue checked dress and her signature pigtail braids, yet it leaves us pondering over the identity of the actress who will portray her in this sequel.
Dorothy has taken possession of the shoes that once belonged to Nessarose as well as Elphaba’s mother, and these shoes may possess magical qualities. Fans of the classic tale, both from the original storybook and the iconic MGM technicolor film featuring Judy Garland, understand that these shoes—now depicted as silver as originally described in L. Frank Baum’s writings—are likely to ignite an all-out conflict between the witches and the Wizard of Oz, given their legendary status and power.
Furthermore, one of the most scandalous revelations in Wicked: For Good is a surprising twist that avid musical fans are already well aware of and have been eagerly anticipating. It turns out that Dorothy’s companions are characters we have previously encountered, and they harbor their own grievances against Elphaba. After being caught in the tumult of the Oz witch conflict, Fiyero (portrayed by Jonathan Bailey) and Boq (played by Ethan Slater) undergo transformations into the beloved Scarecrow and Tin Man, while the lion from the first act develops into the final member of the legendary yellow brick road crew. And, of course, Toto is part of the adventure as well.
The excitement for Wicked: For Good may feel distant, yet these captivating toy releases are already generating significant anticipation for how the narrative will unfold. Both Glinda and Elphaba are set to showcase new appearances that we are absolutely thrilled about. Glinda will dazzle in more elegant ballgowns, while Elphaba’s battle-ready black attire is getting a rugged and edgy update.
