Skullcandy has launched a new pair of wireless headphones, the Crusher 1080 ANC, featuring advanced sound technology developed by Bose.
Priced at $279.99, the Crusher 1080 ANC incorporates groundbreaking Bose technologies, marking a significant shift in the headphone market. One of the standout features is Bose’s QuietControl ANC, which allows users to precisely adjust the level of active noise cancellation (ANC) for optimal performance in various environments. This feature adapts automatically based on surrounding noise levels, offering a more nuanced control compared to other headphones that typically offer only a few preset options.
Another innovative feature of the Crusher 1080 ANC is the integration of TrueSpatial audio with head tracking. This technology enhances the listening experience by creating a sensation that music is emanating from speakers positioned in front of the listener, adding depth to stereo tracks. While I am usually not a fan of spatial audio, Bose manages to implement this feature effectively, particularly with AI-enhanced audio capabilities.
The Crusher 1080 ANC introduces Bose’s WaveForm audio engine, a proprietary technology that optimizes sound quality by balancing acoustics and dynamics. This ensures that voices and music remain clear, even in noisy environments or at high volumes.
In terms of voice clarity, the Crusher 1080 ANC features Bose’s SpeechClarity voice pickup technology, designed to enhance call quality by making voices clearer during conversations, although this is not a new feature.
Skullcandy also claims to have enhanced the drivers in the Crusher 1080 ANC, utilizing a “stiffer material” to increase the pistonic movement of the diaphragm. This innovation reduces harmonic distortion and improves overall sound quality. The headphones feature an enclosed acoustic cavity designed to enhance ANC performance and improve sound detail and separation. The Crusher 1080 ANC offers impressive battery life, providing up to 60 hours of operation with ANC turned off and 50 hours with it activated.
While it’s difficult to assess how these advancements and Bose technologies translate into real-world performance without testing the Crusher 1080 ANC personally, the specifications suggest a competitive price for the features offered. For comparison, Bose’s QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) retail for $449, highlighting the value proposition of the Skullcandy offering. I remain cautious about whether Skullcandy can genuinely compete with Bose’s established dominance in the ANC realm—Bose’s products have a reputation that they need to uphold.
